Structural Beam System Joists Automatically Attaching to Concrete Walls

Hi everyone,

We've been dealing with an issue for quite some time across our company, and I'm hoping someone has found a proper solution.

When creating a Structural Beam System, the joists automatically attach to intersecting concrete walls, often extending to the wall's centerline/midpoint. This behavior doesn't make sense for our workflow, as we simply want the joists to stop at the wall face and not penetrate or automatically connect to the wall.

It doesn't seem to matter how far we move the joists, if they're close enough to the wall, they still attach to it (reset beam system doesnt work too)

Has anyone experienced the same issue? I'm looking for a real, model-wide solution, not a workaround such as detaching individual joists from the system and manually hiding or adjusting them afterward.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Using Revit 2026.4 - If a Beam system is at the same Level as the top of the wall they will automatically cut back you can then raise it above then to sit above the wall and it should remember the cutback

Does editing the Beam System to the face have any influence?

There was known issue in 2025

Beam system end and start have gap from boundary sketch in Revit

I'm referring to the condition where there is a ledge in the wall and the joist bears on that ledge rather than being flush with the exterior face of the wall. Editing the beam system does not appear to have any effect unless the offset is large enough to detach the system from the concrete wall.

Also, this issue has always existed in R24 and R25. I haven't tested it in R26 yet, but I would be surprised if anything has changed. I'm curious how others typically model this condition.

Apologies, I used the Stop at wall face a a literal position and not a ledge scenario

I am not sure how you created the ledge but I simple added another wall on top and and joined them and then uses the inside face of the smaller element without issues

The only other way is to Windows Select the Beam System > Filter > Structural Framing > either Edit the cutback or Change Reference from the Contextual Toolbar

I have seen an option to make the Wall non-structural and use a Coordination discipline View?

This would be impossible because we are using the amazing Tag and by type function to "categorize walls" by ledge type.

Each wall has a type: CW10-A is a specific ledge so I don't want to split the wall. (also I don't want to have two walls if it's one cast in place wall).

Its crazy that we can't avoid the beam in the beam system clashing with the wall 😞

Guessing what you have in place - a Cavity Wall with a Wall Type Edit to create the Ledge using a Reveal I am not sure how you are placing or what levels you are working at but in a Structural model they will typically cut back to the Wall Face? - This has all been created in a Structural Temaplte

If you could share a simple model with a single wall and a Beams System showing you example it may help?

How are you creating the notch in the top of the wall?

If you are using a model-in-place void to make the notch in the top of your wall, you can just add a start or end extension the length you need to the joists.  You do not have to select them one at a time.  You can select all of them at once, filter out the beam system, and add the extension value.

Hi all, thanks for the answer first of all.

Not sure how can help the model, is a Concrete wall with a reveal added (typical all over the projects) and typical joists.

The joists shouldn't being flush with the face of the wall as your image they should being free to be moved with the end of the beam system.

I think the answer of add the end start extension is the best workaround. It's not really a solution and not a doable things but this is what we have.

This is how the software works

Help | About Beam to Wall Cutback | Autodesk

I find change Reference the Easiest as it reaxct to that reference

jay_colc_0-1784563858145.png

You can also use Beam Join

Yes, the fact that the software works this way doesn't mean it's right or efficient. In my opinion, it's both inefficient and poorly designed.

For example, that parameter could be linked directly to the Beam System properties. Selecting individual joists in Revit is already cumbersome (I ended up creating my own script to handle it), and then you have to repeat the same process every time you add a new span or new joists.

In fact, if Revit allowed users to fully control beam ends within a Beam System through the boundary definition, the workflow would already be much more effective and intuitive.

Selecting individual joists is not a problem... Use the crossing and drag all the way across the beam system, use the filter tool to de-select the beam system itself and then you can change just about any parameter on all the members at once.  If you construct the beam system correctly, it should adjust to changes in the wall...

Please, we all know it’s not fast. I know how to use Select Beam and Filter Elements. A case study is not the same as a real project. In real projects, you can have thousands of elements and hundreds of beam systems, especially in the US and other Anglo-Saxon markets where light-frame construction is very common.

The easiest solution would be the ability to select a beam or a beam system and then automatically select all associated elements.

Anyway, the main point is that the best workaround is to use Cutback on the individual elements. There is currently no way to drive this through a beam system property or to make Revit stop the beams where the user defines the beam system perimeter.

Thanks anyway for the help!

@lglielmi

Here is a solution that is not really a solution:

Install pyRevit and activate the MCP server, link Codex or Claude to it. There is a How to do it on Bimpure.

Now you can tell Codex/Claude to adjust the joist ends to the beam system boundaries.

If you modify the beam system it might reset, meaning it is not a permanent solution.

You can ask Claude/Codex to write a pyRevit routine that does the above, (took about 15 minutes including 2 failed attempts)

At least it reduces the work to one click.

Aside from that , post the desired behavior in Revit ideas.

Thanks, I do find useless post in Revit Ideas, the majority of daily problems are there since 20 yrs and still haven't been solved yet. They know already (same for the whole steel connection problems, now they are trying to do something).
Thanks for the IDea I can create a button in our plugin to do it, but still is not the best
