Spot Elevation problem...

Hi,

I've been getting a recurring problem in Revit 2011 Structures that is really doing my head in. Sometimes (but not all the time - probably about half the time), when I go to place a spot elevation on a plan view, I can't. I've checked all the usual issues - the views aren't in Wireframe, the View Range is OK, I have tried all view Disciplines, but I can' only place a spot elevation on a slab edge, rather than in the middle, where it's needed. Anyone come across this before? And anyone know what I'm doing wrong?? As a workaround, I'm putting tiny model lines on the model where needed and putting spot elevations on them, but that's hardly ideal...

Hi,
I can't seem to replicate your problem, so maybe you're missing an update. Check on Autodesk for that.

Remember: If you have a sloping floor, you cannot place a spot elevation on the part of the slab above the cut plane. so you need to increase the values for top and cut in the view range.

Thanks for the reply - if I were you, I'd be happy that I couldn't make the same thing happen - it's **** frustrating! Also - I'm not trying to put the Spot Elevation on a sloping floor, just normal, level ones..

Hi,

Please make a copy of your project, leave only the floor in question, and attach it so we can check it. Otherwise, I have no idea what might be the issue.

Hi,

I would do that, but I don't think it will help - the RVT model file I am working on is fine - I can put the spot elevation on in any view etc., but it is linked into a sheets file (along with several other models) and it's there that the problem is, i.e. putting the spot elevation onto a linked model. sorry - should have mentioned that before! Also, it isn't one particular floor, it's all of them.

I was hoping that someone might have come across this before and be able to tell me about some setting that I'd got wrong or something...

Thanks anyway.

If I am having trouble placing a spot elevation, and time is of the essence, I draw a short detail line (annotation tab) where I want to place the spot elevation to, and it then comes in with no issues.

If by some odd chance my nattering was useful -- that's great, glad to help. But if it actually solved your issue, then please mark my solution as accepted 🙂

What kind of View are you placing the Spot Elevation in? When you said "...then it comes in with no issues.", are you referring to the Detail Line or the Spot Elevation Tag?

Just fixed the same issue by doing the following

The graphic display option should be on "hidden", if it is on "hidden" change it to
"wireframe" and back to "hidden", you should now be able to place spot elevation anywhere on slab.

Also - You cannot place a spot elevation on a floor if your rooms are turned on.

Cheers

Check your view range. I have run into this when the actual top of an object is above the view range.

If you are working on the plan view and the xref files or attached autocadd files are turned on, you should turn it off then try again putting the spot elevation.

Having the same problem as well but in Detail Views.

Checked

detail level not coarse? Is Fine.

Visual style not wireframe? Is Hidden

Rooms turned off? Yes

Any ideas?

thanks

I have experienced the same issue.  Revit sometimes cannot find the slab, best solution is to Isolate Category (slabs and elevation tags) and tag the slabs with everything else hidden in view.

I created a new View Template from a View that was working for spot elevations and applied and adapted it as required to the View in question

None of the suggestions worked for me, I'm using revit 22. I'm also facing a strange issue with revit 22 recently, I have view template applied and then if I go to the VT selection from identity data, it shows I have no VT selected.

Hello,

I just figured this out, at least, for my purposes and hopefully yours. A spot elevation cannot be placed on a slab in a Detail View, it has to be a Plan View. Why? Who the heck knows. I had a callout view for a stair/ramp area that I'm detailing that I did not realized was created as a Detail View (in the properties palette). I had to re-create the call-out because it's not possible to change that in the properties (why? again, who knows). When re-creating, change the view type to Floor Plan in the properties before you begin drawing the call-out boundary. See image below for reference. I hope this helps! (Generative AI sucks for answering Revit questions so hopefully our jobs are safe for a while. Go humans!)
