making a void extrusion in column

hello there

 

i have column , and i want to make an opening in it 

how can i do it ??

 i tried to make void extrusion but it was not able to make cut to make a void

There are different options, which is best  depends on your needs.

Use a structural column instead of a architectural column.

Create (parametric) voids inside the column family.

I already draw the column
but i am looking for a way to make an opening in column with out editing the family

Strange for me it does not work on architectural columns (Revit 2016). If I select the tool "Opening by Face" it will not allow me to select the architectural column.

you are right for the Architectural Columns.

In such case I use a Component Model in Place ( not a Void because it doesn't work) , Generic Model by preferance and then Cut , taking care of the order of selections ( first select the member that you want to be cut - as can be seen in my screencast)

Finally hide the Generic Model objects....

It is possible to make a family face based with a void in it! I found it to be the best solution!
