Going Through Daniel John Stine Design Integration Using Autodesk Revit -- Stuck on Chapter 8 -- Structural.

I am having problems on Chapter 8--Where the views that we are asked to import on Page 9-ish cause problems later in that they are greying out the view edit. When I go through and manually edit the views (View, manage templates, Structural Framing Plan) I see that the views are all scrweed up and doors and weird stuff is showing up--despite me and a friend restarting several times.

The Structural is showing up under the 1st floor but still showing up on the 2nd floor plan -- manually moving stuff around sort of works, but then disappears from each plan view (From all 3, the first floor, second floor, and roof). The tags still show up though. I will attach my file below so you can poke and prod all you want. ISBN of the book is 9781630574512

I'm not an expert--just a student, so I'm not as nearly as good at this program as the professionals out there. Please enlighten me!

I will also go ahead and attach the chapter 10 starter file so that you have a reference of how chapter 8 is supposed to look like afterwards. (chapter 9 does not add anything to the building).

isn't there a Support Number with the manual? I'd start by calling the makers of the instruction's manual 😊

Other than that, in a Revit Structural view, you will only see "Structural" elements and elements that make openings (Windows, Doors...).

There are also difference's in the Structural Framing View templates in the 2 models. don't know if that is intentional or something your supposed to fix over the course of the class.

Again... id find the support number for the course and ask them.

I also noticed a difference within the files like you said. I couldn't figure out why that was because it is not figured out through the class -- the book lists out to explicitly ad those view templates so I don't know why they're gone in the next starter file.

I'll talk to the book support team and see what they come up with -- I did go through an online support (email) process but that did not yield anything meaningful. My instructor is also stumped (He's been doing mostly residential design for 30+ years, so even this is a fairly new thing for him).

looks like some inconsistencies in the dataset? I can give you several options of how I would correct the view issues, but hesitate because I don't want to mess anything up for you later in the class :-).

in your Chap 8 model.... in the Level 2 Structural Framing view....

  • set the Underlay settings to Level 1 > Level 2 > Look Down
  • edit your Structural Framing View template
    • open the Model Display, Edit... button
    • change the Model Display Style setting to Wireframe.

  • another issue is the Level 2 Structural framing view in Chap 8 model has its "Associated Level" set to Level 1. it should be Level 2... so the view was not set up properly.
    • it looks like it was copied from the "Level 1 Structural framing" view vs made using the View Ribbon > Create panel> Plan Views tool.

just some things to check... 😉

I'll check through that tonight thanks!

I remember the book specifically asks for you to copy the view and rename it -- so having the wrong associated levels seems to have come down from the book--but I'm no pro--the book tends to skip a few steps sometimes and I don't know quite enough to figure out the few steps inbetween.

I've had users do things incorrectly on occasion so they can see what issues it causes.... Maybe....  😆

That view should have been made by using the Plan View tool, selecting a Structural Plan option

Then pick the Second Floor option

if second floor doesn't show up in the list, uncheck the check box on the bottom of the window
