Changing Templates at intermediate stage of a project

After starting a project in Default Metric Structural Analysis template, it is felt that it would have been better to start with Metric Multi-Discipline template.

Is there any way to switch over...

Please guide step-by-step...

You could open up a new Multi-Discipline Project and Transferring Project Standards from this File to your current Project but this only allows types of family, view templates  colour fill schemes, text styles etc.

It doesn't transfer the Project but brings in the Settings from the Template you need!

Probable the best alternative would be to Start the Mult-Discipline Project and then Link in the Structural Template

This will effectively bring in the Structural Model into the Multi-discipline project as a linked element for reference.

You can then Bind this model into this Project and the elements will be brough through

Personally I would in this instance take the hit and realise this for the next project and Start a new Multi-Discipline Template and LINK in the Structural Project and make changes in either Project as required.

Going by your suggestion I started a MD Template & linked my model created in the standalone template & it worked fine.

However, this being a Linking scenario, any changes made in the initial model in the standalone template is automatically getting reflected in the linked model.

How to overcome this....

My objective : After linking the model in the MD template I want to sever all connections with the parent file in the standalone template. Thereafter changes made if any, to the parent file in the standalone templ;ate should not be reflected in the linked model.

How to achieve this....?

If you are working in a MD project and Link in a Standalone Project the Standalone Project should be for Reference and you should not be able to edit it or influence it back.

For example if I am working on an Architectural Project and Link in a Structural Project then the Structural Project is used for Referencing Only to show in my Architectural Project where the Structural elements are!

I cannot edit the Structural Project inside my Architectural Project!!!

If you BIND the Structural Project INTO the Architectural Project you are basically adding/merging 2 Projects together and working in one model.

When you select a Linked Revit file, there is an option to "bind" that to the current project. In some regards similar to binding an xref in Cad.

When you select 'Bind', there is an option if you wanted Levels and or Details. Usually just levels should suffice. You may get a warning from Revit due to the size of the file getting bound. After the file gets bound, then it becomes a Group. I usually will Ungroup the object to that I can select individual elements.

Warning - IF you do this, you lose ALL connection with the file that got bound. No changes will show up. All work will now have to take place in this coordinated revit file.

Note this also does not create any sheets or tag items - this is work you will need to do. There are some videos on YouTube on this - one here: https://youtu.be/_okZ_gvhKYI?si=LvwrlSqeT9QV9ZXL

Please watch the videos before attempting.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I’ve done this before and noticed that once the file is bound, managing updates gets tricky since there's no live link. I usually bind only when absolutely necessary. By the way, while organizing documentation and client updates, I sometimes use an SMM panel to schedule progress visuals on social platforms — helps keep clients informed without manual posting.

Same here—I only bind files when I really need to, just to avoid the hassle with updates. And good call on using an SMM panel for scheduling updates. I’ve found it super helpful too for sharing project milestones or visual progress without having to post everything manually. Keeps things smooth and consistent.

You can’t directly switch templates mid-project. The workaround is:

  1. Start a new project with the Metric Multi-Discipline template.

  2. Open your old file.

  3. Use Manage → Transfer Project Standards to copy settings.

  4. Load any missing families manually.

(If you plan to share the file online, it’s smart to run the link through a website scam checker first for safety.)
