Adding a splice symbol to non-steel columns in graphical column schedule?

Top/Base connection symbols are only available for steel columns, but I've been asked if I can add splice symbols to the timber columns (see attached image). Is that possible to do in a smart way?

The only method i can see of achieving this would be to change the Material for model Behaviour to Steel within the timber Column Family so the Top & Bottom Connection Parameters become available in the Properties Palette but obviously this may have a knock on affect around the model?

yeah, that's not something I can do for the reasons you mentioned...

I agree!

It is but a symbol, you could just insert it as an annotation symbol and drop it over the schedule.  
I have not tried this mind you!

I agree!
