Hello,

You have to create small images and load them in your families, and place them in Type Image parameter, for example.

Then you create an schedule with the description and Type image, for example.

This is how we handle our legends at our firm also. 
I have a few tips to pass along. 

1.  make a yes/no parameter (type) in the family to control if it should show up in the legend. We find this very useful and I think you will too. 

2. You can have the legend show other information - we have a column called "Typical Mounting"  and use that to explain to the contractor our expectations for mounting heights and such. 

Your legends have a better appearance than ours and I would like to learn more about exactly how you generating the type images. You have some side by side symbols, and this is a new idea for me! Do you then have white space in the single column items so prevent them from scaling up? Our main problem is making the symbols of consistent size.

Sizing the images is challenging when using one single schedule. That’s why I have them by category.
