Labels with instance parameter

Hi,

I am working on MEP project modelling builders holes through walls and need to produce bespoke labels showing the size of them (Width x height). I have done builders family hole as generic model and give the instance parameters for width, length and height (holes are of different sizes).

I am stuck with labels.

I tried umpteen Youtube tutorials how to combine instance parameters with label as well as several forum entries but nothing works. I have spent a day labelling all these holes manually but if change the hole size and do not update the label then I am in real trouble.

I need a simple label showing dimensions.

How to do it?

Thanks

The most common method is to make use of tags. You can create your own tag family.

Some built-in parameters can be used in tags (visible when you place a label inside the family).

For other parameters, you need to make use of Shared parameters.

Louis, thanks for your reply.

I know what to do, the question is: HOW? I have tried to make a shared parameter from the box width and length but failed.

I think I have to learn a lot still  :). In meantime, I did all manually. A day work. Glad my boss doesnt know It could have been done in 10 minutes :).

Thanks anyway.

For shared parameters you have to create a shared parameter file. This is a txt file stored somewhere on your harddrive (or on the network). This file can be used in all projects and by others.

HERE a site which goes in detail about creating shared parameters (file), or google for "creating shared parameter file".

This file will become important when doing more and more projects. You do not want to loose this file. Also think about you naming strategy, it will give headaches if you later want to rename those parameters
