Interoperability regarding gbXML

Hi all,

As a new user and explorer of Revit, I'm studying it's Interoperability for my Thesis.
My simple question is, what kind of gbXML file is Revit able to Import? And from what kind of softwares? Also, would someone have any file that could upload here, so I can see how it works? I know Revit, in that case, should not be a viewer for other softwares geometry.
My Thesis is related to the software interoperability regarding Energy Simulations.

Thank you

Hi there,

Regarding on the gbXML file thar revit produces, you can read all about it here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2021/EN....

For the interoperability, here is a list of the software that can read the gbXML file type. https://www.gbxml.org/Software_Tools_that_Support_GreenBuildingXML_gbXML

You can actually import a gbXML file in Revit for Heating and Cooling Loads analysis. Here's how: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2021/EN...

You can also watch about gbXML here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zM6p-wF2AM

I hope this helps.

I only have experience exporting gbXML from Revit. A lot of cleaning up required in the energy/load software. The only good thing is it gets the windows and doors in the correct size.

With that lackluster performance going from Revit, I never tried it the other way around (and isn't really needed for my workflow).

Revit Version: R2026.2
Hardware: i9 14900K, 64GB, Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada 16GB
Add-ins: ElumTools; Ripple-HVAC; ElectroBIM; Qbitec

Hi @jrobrador19, thank you for the answer.

I've been reading about gbXML files created by Revit on the link you sent me.

I'm just still not able to open any gbXMl file into revit. Would you have any sample that could work for me? My issue is related to the opening of that files into Revit. I already know the procedure of doing the import (Click Insert Tab, Import Panel, Import gbXML). But what about that file, where can I produce any of those gbXML files that Revit will be able to open? Would you have any of those?

Thank you for the help.

Hi @HVAC-Novice, so do I.

Actually I'm trying the other way arround to produce my thesis related to the interoperability of those softwares (Autodesk and Design Builder), and I'm struggling to find a way to import a model produced by DesignBuilder into Revit.

Thank you for the answer.
