How to stop Background Processes?

Anonymous
Not applicable

Im working on a MEP model with HVAC services and I was working away and tried to save it but a message popped up and saying 'cannot save this document because duct systems are calculating' Ive found the background processes icon on the status bar to monitor them but cannot cancel them or stop them so I can save my work. very frustrating as its been doing this for over 3 hours now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi J.Lorenc,

my "theory" does not plan to kill the process but to (re)activate it ... (In my revit 2019.2)

This solution worked for me 🙂 after me duct system calculation wouldn't finish and I was going to lose about 3 hours of modelling work

Kind Regards

Hello, I had the same problem, and in Revit 2019 I couldn't solve it by running Revitworker.exe. Then I tried (Synchronize and Modify settings) and it worked, I was able to close Revit and restart it while saving the progress. I hope this proves useful.

I had a simillar problem while creating an steel structure and I solved this background process problem using ctrl+z until I had all process canceled and being able to save my work.

I hope this can help you guys.

I am having a similar issue with Revit 2020.  It prevents me from saving the project because it says it's calculating the ducts.

If I go to to the Background Process panel it just shows "Duct Systems calculating..." message and does not let me stop it.  Trying to close the project also does not work because Revit says I cannot close the project because it's "calculating".

It seems to have got into a loop and does not allow to stop it.

I do not want to use Windows' Task Manager to kill Revit because I do not want to lose what I did.

Looks like a bad SW design. Is this a bug and should be reported?  How to do it?

Actually, this is usually due to a problem with the system. One open end can cause this to happen along with other types of flow errors.

Have you tried the solution marked in this thread?

If so, and calcs are still running, I suggest you start a new thread as you will need a different solution.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Thanks!  I tried that, but could not stop it until I used Windows' Task Manager and killed Revit itself.

I did not find any "open circuits" but will double check again.   It seems that the HVAC ductwork system design has many details and it's easy to overlook something.

The Background Processes panel should allow us to kill a process if we think it's taking too long.

Have you tried turning off the calculations? Actually, I think you should set them to performance.

How about starting a new thread?

Message #24 worked for me in RVT 2020.2, do not touch the Background Processes window or else you'll have to do it again. Revit freezes up for a moment but recovers...

FYI, I was able to switch between the two projects I had open prior to terminating the process, couldn't sync either one, but after terminating and syncing one project, switching to the other one crashed Revit. You'll be able to sync one job but not the other so CHOOSE WISELY.

This work  for me i hoop for you also 😉

If you want to stop revit calculation just do ctrl + alt + Delete then in the task manager select details.
Hier you will see Revitworker.exe . just End task revitworker.exe . Dont attention to revit calculation massage just Now you have to save your file immediately.

and then close revit and reopen it.

@info's suggestion worked for me. It is in Task Manager>Details for me.  There were 2 Revitworker processes running.  I ended both tasks and was able to sync with no issue after that.

On Windows 10, and Revit 2019 i was not able to find RevitWorker.exe in task manager.

But in task manager, under Autodesk Revit i had 2 programs : Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Revit [ File name ] ;

I killed the "Autodesk Revit" to leave only Autodesk Revit [File Name] .

After this i got a message in Revit that Background calculation stopped: Retry or Bug.

I closed the window and i could save my work.

None of the suggested solutions work in Revit 2022. You'd think by this point they'd have added a cancel button on the background processes. Just lost 3 hours of work. Thanks Autodesk!!

Of course, it doesn't have anything to do with the state of the model.

Time for a new thread. This thread has a lot of "works for me" and "doesn't work for me". There are a number of causes and maybe 2022 is different or maybe something in your model is causing the calculations to loop or error.

There are other possible solutions that worked for others suggested here. I suggest that you try them.
