Sorry but this is not possible as the local file is named after your Revit username & you cant change your username if you have a local file open.

Accepted solution

you can do this as 2 different users within the same pc

it is more work than needed

before you open your file go to options and set the user name to who you want to be at that time.

this only works if you have 2 different sessions of Revit open at 1 time

and each time you want to test something as USER 1 or USER 2 you will need to change the Revit User name.

this method is not recommended in a corporate environment.

I see that you already have your solution, but I just wanted to chime in and say that this method works fine for educational purposes.

I just did a Revit Fundamentals training class.  We didn't have network sharing set up, so I did exactly what Kadmonkee suggested: I opened two sessions of Revit, was logged into one under my Autodesk ID, and changed the name on the other.  I put both sessions side by side on my monitor, which was connected to our big screen training TV, then just switched back and forth between sessions showing how work sharing would work.  It's obviously not an ideal way to actually work on a project, but it was fine for demonstration purposes, and the students all got the gist of work sharing based on that example.

So yeah, if you're a student and only have one machine, this is a great way to test out work sharing.
