open the revit 2016 project in 2016 revit

find the family that is having an issue converting to 2018

open that family in 2018 by itself and see if you can upgrade that family first

if you can, save the family as a 2018 to reinsert into your upgraded 2016/2018 project file

another option is when upgrading to a later version do them sequentially 2016,2017,2018 avoid skipping versions.

2016 is pretty stable

2017 has some issues

2018 has more issues

if you upgrade from 2016 t o2017 it may work better.

keep an archive of each version while upgrading.

Yes , it's better up upgrade gradually.  Open 2016 file in 2017, save.  Open 2017 file in 2018.
