At the moment creating railing can be pretty tricky to model. Especially for some industrial structures. It would be great if we could model railing along any face (slab, beams, etc) or at least when editing in 3D the line would be in 3D instead of 2D, so that we know exactly which line represents which railing.

It would be interesting, if the "Baluster pattern" could be changed as a Instance based item. This would help build the railings for stairs easier. A helper object system to calculate some of the individual baluster panels would be ideal. Moreover if the Baluster pattern could be formed like the Handrail support, it will help a lot.

Currently, if you create a multistory stair, Revit trips over itself and generates a warning when it creates the inside railing, because the plan-based sketch lines are on top of each other. You cannot edit such a railing without resorting to a kluge like moving each line into the stair by a different small amount so they are not coincident. Real-world railings actually do have runs on different levels that are in the same vertical plane, and Revit should be able to model this reality. If the sketch lines were 3D as the OP suggests, this would eliminate both the vertical-plane conflict and the problem of the railing becoming horizontal when Revit decides the sketch line isn't inside the stair. (This latter problem can occur whether or not the sketch line actually is inside the stair - see my Forum post entitled "Stair railing issues.")

I had to make my own railing family for industrial platforms.  Basically it's a line based family (constrained to the edge of beam flange) that sweeps the rails (with parameters that control the extensions for inside corner, outside corner, cut back, etc.) and adds posts as a first-last array.  I would really like for REVIT to build something similar so I'm not forced to de-bug my own creation all the time..Industrial railing.png
