Modular Revit

Modular Revit

I don’t know any program that does this but to give greatly improved flexibility to Revit and the use of multiple screens it would be great if Revit could open in modules that can be placed anywhere over the screens or duplicated across screens like the windows start bar for Revit tabs. These modules could do away with permanent windows like properties and browser and focus on a shortcut for quick edit properties, opening where the cursor is and then disappear once done, this would increase working screen size and allow ease of use over two screens without having to move the mouse across to another screen. I imagine this would be a setting for advanced users and the existing or classic version of Revit would still be available for those that either work on one screen or are beginners.

Revit is not linux. Modularity requires multiple (distinct) teams working on certain (types of) modules. Modularity requires a much larger infrastructure, with many teams working around the globe (around the clock), making small adjustments/patches on daily basis. This approach is not commercially sound. It works for open-source software, not for heavy commercial software like Revit. To make it work, Autodesk should adopt another business model.

Hi

Thanks for the reply it's always good to understand the limitations of development. If Revit was to support a dual screen functionality (do you know when it might by any chance?) is the tab mirroring an option under the current way that Revit is built?

Not quite certain what's being requested here.  This sounds a lot like asking for windows which are independent of the application window.  If so, there's already a few requests for this.  It's not an easy thing to do.

The other request sounds a lot like asking for context menus, or something along the lines of "pie" menus or "marking" menus - intelligent interfaces which pop up at or around the cursor when working.  I'm not really a big fan of these, and I suspect it's not too popular with others either (have a look for the "Steering Wheel" interface available in a number of Autodesk products).  The problem with this is that the pop-ups usually show up in the most inconvenient locations, obscuring part or all of what you're working on.  While a dockable independent palette means you have to move the cursor, it's also in a consistent location which can be guaranteed to be out of the way.

@ dgorsman: I believe Jonny was asking for something like Allplan software: to buy different modules (e.g. architecture, structure, associative views, topo/geo, advanced renderer, etc). Revit used to have distinct versions for Architecture, Structure, MEP, but it was difficult to manage so many versions. It's much simpler to maintain one single version of Revit which contains all the tools you may / maynot need. This is major advantage for very big projects, all architects / engineers may work on ONE single 3D model for best coordination.
