Cycle through Previous Selections

Cycle through Previous Selections

Ctrl + Left Arrow will reselect the previous selection. It would be nice if holding Ctrl and pressing Left Arrow multiple times would allow a user to cycle through previous selections.

Reasoning: After selecting several items and making some changes to them, if I accidentally click another item while checking the changes, then I can't reselect the several items if I need to make additional changes.

First, this kind of exists... so I hope my explanation below of what I do is helpful.

I use the search box in Keyboard Shortcuts find new features I wanted / didn't know existed but now use, and it also gives you the toolbar location of the command you can see in search in case you're not a RH mouse, LH Keyboard Shortcuts kind of person like I am. 🙂

To do this, go to View -> Windows -> Keyboard Shortcuts or type "KS" if you haven't modified your Keyboard Shortcuts in Revit.

Once the dialogue box is open, search for "select prev" yields the following item:

If you haven't pressed the escape key to exit out of your accidental next selection (even if the next selection is nothing), you can Right Click and pick "Select Previous" and that can work. It's a bit taxing in my opinion but it works (shown below):

As you can see for me from the first pic, however, I have a shortcut that I use for "previous selection". This flows much better than having everything in the right hand on the mouse so I wanted to throw that out there as an option (and my preferred one).

That said, since Ctrl + Left Click in Revit selects multiple items, instead of that I'd suggest Ctrl + Right Click should be the way to select previous instead of left unless they add a way to toggle the way you select items like AutoCAD does, so I'm still upvoting this in hopes that some change will happen.

Jacob, thanks for your comment. It is well put together but it missed the point a bit.

The issue I have is that it only does one previous selection. I want several (the last ten for example) groups of selections that I can toggle through with Ctrl + ← or Ctrl + →.

Example Scenario:

I select twenty items and make some changes.

I select something else (which unselects the twenty items) and make some other changes to that item.

I select five items and change them.

I hit Esc after making changes.

It would be nice to hold Ctrl and hit ← a few times to reselect the twenty items. (Ctrl + ← to reselect the five items, Ctrl + ←← to select the single item, and Ctrl + ←←← to reselect the twenty items)
