Complex line types

Complex line types

In Revit the  lines types you can have is really pathetic compared to AutoCADs - dashes, dots and continious lines. (And the ofcourse the Insulation that has its own button to make, and the revision cloud if that counts...). Would be very helpful to be able to make various line types with shapes in 2d - like tracks, talus and I thing that was already suggested - with text in it. Out from deperation (again) we are using detail line family with text in it to display  ELEC, HYDRO, Xs (for fence), etc... but comes a curve and there the solution stops. We are also forced to do untinkable things to a surveyors drawings in order to preserve their line types in Revit.

"The new line types should also be able to display a real dot instead of the short "1.5" line!"

Reported by German customer Obermeyer Planen und Beraten GmbH:

This limitation restrains engineers in the D-A-CH region to display lines according to DIN 1356-1standard!

Any chance linetypes, specifically Column Grid Lines could show this?

I would do anything to have CAD linetypes in Revit, Electrically we used linetypes with Text to denote different services on drawings, now we resort to printing in colour (which has major flaws if printed in black and white) or a series of dashes and dots which is ridiculously confusing and impractical, I would love to have the ability to just had a few characters of text between a solid line.

To go along with this, I think the Line Styles dialog should also be overhauled.  Some graphical representation of what your Line Pattern is for each Subcategory would be fantastic, rather than the name of the line pattern used.

As electrical and plumbing, we need text in our linetypes. It seems like it would be possible to add "text" to the options of "dot" "dash" and "gap" on the line pattern options. With adding text characters, it would be possible to approximate many complex line types as well. Imagine ASCII art linetypes.

@NateBrush To be able to add text to linetypes wouldn't be as simple as just having a "text" option in the definition dialog - you'd still need to specify Size, Font, Width, etc. (unless there's a project-wide setting, but that would be limiting). Maybe the "Complex Linetypes" solution would allow you to "draw" text, or maybe having an "Annotation" option (instead of "Text") would allow the inclusion of Text AND other things (complex lines)?

Not that it would be easy to add text, but it seems like the most straightforward way to add it to the existing interface (and probably rendering code, but that's beyond my skill). Users could specify text type from their existing created types then enter the text string. Then the program could render lines, dots, dashes, and strings.

But adding more complex lines and shapes would be great, for all the reasons everyone listed above. Hopefully they pick this one up soon!

Reusing AutoCADs line type (and hatch) definition and createing an appropriate Editor (for hatches too) is good.

This enhances data exchange a lot.

To better represent civil information, how about adding text to line types or system line types that are respectful to civil?

You can do that by creating new pat file coding for line patterns i guess.

This idea has been created on the behalf of an user.

The users are asking for a simple way to label  piping systems with their system type so that you see text on the piping line:

rtaImage.png

This can be easily done in Autocad but in REVIT this can only be done manually by using the steps described here:

https://aectechtalk.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/revit-piping-system-labels/

The idea is to make this process easier in future releases

This idea is similar to this one (but focuses on complex geometry in line styles; do not include the text label):

The Property Line tool is inadequate without Types.

There are many types of boundary on a development/construction project, including the Planning Application boundary (the red line), the land in control of the applicant boundary (the blue line), the site ownership boundary etc etc.

We need Property Line Types with the following additional Type Parameter:

- Line Style (from the standard project list of Line Styles with various Line Patterns and Colors)

In addition to having Property Line Types, we also require Property Line Fills. This would therefore require an additional Type Parameter:

- Fill Pattern (from the standard project list of Filled Regions with various Hatch Patterns and Colors)

Would like to have an option to set different types of property lines so we can assign different line weights and styles to each. This would be to use for setbacks vs property lines. This is an issue that comes up on every project. Surprised it hasn't been provided yet.

Setback lines often need to be shown on taller buildings for height setbacks. When we add them as property lines, they show up on all levels as property lines. If we could identify the setbacks with a dashed line instead of a property line could save us a good amount of time.... and would just plain make sense.

Thanks,

Edward

Posted an idea on AUGI with regards to linetypes in AutoCAD. Maybe Autodesk could share internal resources between the Autocad, Revit and even Inventor development teams to make this happen and then tweak to suite each program's user interface as required!!!
