Revit Backup folder is not a valid Backup Directory

Dear Support,

We are experiencing some serious issue recovering a model (revit server based).

On opening the model a user ran into the error message: "The model is missing too many elements".

I followed all your suggestions and workflows from this page: http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-9AFAAE6B-4107-4478-8B80-53467FE118DB

And then from this page in order to recover the model based on a user local copy:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/EN...

Unfortunately the backup folder for both the users working on the model is throwing the same error: "Folder [...] is not a valid backup directory".

So the model onto the revit server is corrupted and cannot be opened. The user's local copies are corrupted as well and the backup folders are not working.

Any additional info would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the support

daniel

A month ago, we had the same issue in v2017. However we did find a solution via previous versions on out data server, I still kept the faulty central model because I just wanted to know if an upgrade to v2018 could do the trick. It did. If your project allows it to work with v2018, maybe this can resolve your problem.

Did you get any respond to this? The backup folder has plenty of large rws and dat files, but Revit does not allow me to access them. This is with Revit 2018 and I need to access the backup files asap. Autodesk, can you please provide an answer?

Do not open any files in the folder manually. Run restore backup in revit and navigate to that folder, you will see no files but that is okay, just click open th en follow the instruction from there.

Same problem for me. Yes I go through revit to recover back up, click the folder where the back up is, but then it says it is not a valid back up directory, so nothing happens.

It always seems that when I have a problem I cannot solve, I can find a forum thread like this one where someone else has also experienced the same problem and inevitably there is no solution.

My software had an "unexpected error", and shut down. My local file shortcut is time-stamped the time right before the crash if I look at my "recent" file folder. But the actual local file and central model show that they have not been saved for 24 hours, which is not true. How else would I have a time-stamp to a shortcut file? But, despite being synced and saved every 15 minutes today, all my work is gone from today. So, when I go to restore the backup from the folder with the same timestamp as the time right before the crash, I get the error, "Folder is not a valid backup directory".

Help. Anyone? Bueller?

If I go to: Collaborate – Restore Backup and select the folder that is timestamped with the last save before the crash 8:49 PM:

C:/Users/<username>/OneDrive/Documents/<local filename>_backup

Result: “Folder…..is not a valid backup directory” and no option but to close that window.

Collaborate – Restore Backup and select the folder that is timestamped with the day before:

C:/Users/<username>/OneDrive/Documents/0-Projects/<Project folder name>/<Central filename>_backup

Result: I am given 3 versions of project backup files dated from 9:07 PM the day before, 8:47 PM the day before, and 11 days before that.

So, the one that says it’s invalid is the path to the local file. The one that shows backup files is the central model file. But it is 24 hours old.

Even IF somehow the local model was not syncing to the central all day long, why would my local file still show the date of the day before if I also have shortcut files with the correct timestamp and folders for backups with the correct timestamp?

xlsx includes two values: Draft and Final. If your company also uses a status called Pending Approval, you need to add it to the list of valid keyword values in ...

Had the same issue today. Ran into the error message: "The model is missing too many elements" and the backup folder was throwing message that it is an invalid backup folder.

Turned out that revit didn't like the name of the project and in turn the name of the backup folder. (There was a dot followed by space inside a projects name)

Try changing the name of the backup folder to [litterally anything]_backup. There has to be "_backup" attached to the name.
