Is there not a way of setting dimensions in 3d without workplanes? Hopefully I've been doing this wrong all this time.

If we're dimensioning from face to face or point to point, or point to face, there's absolutely no need to set workplanes from this dimensions to function. Why does revit force us to do this when most other software can function in 3d with and without workplanes?

You can Pick A Plane, such as the planar surface of an element, as well as a Named Work Plane.

what are you trying to dimension in 3D? i don't have any issues dimension items in my 3D view. I just have to TAB select the items like i normally would. you cant put an arbitrary dimension anywhere you want, but you cant do that in a plan view either.
