Window Family Parameters

Hello,

My boss is having a hard time adjusting to real world wall thickness and wants the plans to show just the stud/core width - this isn't a problem, I've gotten it figured out. What I CAN'T seem to do, is make a window family (and probably door family will be the same) that doesn't look ridiculous when there's a couple inches of finish material outside the wall face, such as EIFS or stone veneer. When I turn off the wall finishes, the windows are still the thickness of the full wall. Is there a way to modify window parameters to lock to the core face of the wall, rather than the finish face? I confess I'm at a loss, without just making a width parameter and changing the depth on a case by case basis for each wall type (which as I think about it, would come with its own set of problems...) Any ideas, or is this not possible?

If you want the finishes wrap then edit the family and add one reference plane on the interior, one on the exterior, and set them as Wall Closure.  You still need to align them with the wall core layers, or enter the value for the finish thicknesses in project yourself.

Thanks, I think that makes sense. I'll give it a try this morning. To clarify, are you using the align command for each window to place it where you want in the wall, or are you creating parameters (I assume this is the case) that you can fill in the distance for each window?

I created instance parameters to control where the window setback lines are.  Then I can align or enter values for the parameters for each window in the project.

I tried it and it works great as long as I never enter 0" (or the planes proceed to switch to the exterior side of the wall face for whatever reason) which is definitely something I can live with.

I forgot to mention that setting the reference planes as Wall Closure allows the wall finish layers to wrap to that lines.
