WHERES MY LINKED CAD MODEL IN IMPORTED CATEGORIES VG SETTINGS?!

I've wasted hours trying to figure out how to unhide a generic model which had a linked cad file in it. We just upgraded our central model from 2016 to 2017. In 2016, the CAD model is found by its cad name in the imported categories of vg settings, but in 2017 it has disappeared. What is going on? This is so frustrating!

Can't find it in there. In the jpg I attached, you can see 3D Mtius..... right in the main imported categories tab in 2016. 2017 its nowhere to be found.

Scroll down until you see Imports in Families.  It must be in there.  Whatever you see outside of Imports in Family category are not in the family, but in the project.

It's not there unless revit renames the cad file in 2017. In 2016, the cad model doesn't show up under imports in families; it shows up under the main imported categories tab. This is a link/imported cad model inside a generic model created in the systems tab's component's model in place tool. I've tried both linked and imported as well as other cad files and they don't show up in 2017.

I also have a revit model of the cad model. I could use this but am completely lost on how to control the visibility of the linked revit model. I know how to control the visibility of things within each view but I'm not gonna go through every view in my model and change the settings which takes numerous steps. If I want to turn off the linked model's grid lines and levels throughout the entire model in every view, do I have to delete it from the linked revit model?

Is the Generic model a loadable family or an in-place family?

This is a link/imported cad model inside a generic model created in the systems tab's component's model in place tool so I'm guessing an in-place family.

Okay so it is an in place family then the cad link is not under the imports in families category. You said link/imported cad, so to clarify, did you link or import the dwg in?

Imported dwgs will not show up there. Links should. Can you edit the generic in place family, delete the cad entity, and link it in again? Do not import.

Yeah I tried that doesn't work. At this point all I want to do is be able to hide the entire model and then unhide it somehow without finding it in vg. Is that possible? Even when I unload the cad file, the generic model still shows the cad model...

You want to UNHIDE the generic model? Use the Reveal Hidden Elements tool, find it, and unhide it.

Or you want to be able to switch the visibility of the dwg file contained/linked within it? Edit the generic model, select the dwg, create a yes/no parameter linked to its visibility property. Then whenever you select it in the project, you can check or uncheck the visibility of the contained/linked dwg file. Although it's going to be pretty hard to select it again once you've turned off the visibility of the contained/linked dwg file, unless you've put something else into the in-place component that is still visible.

If you just want to use VG settings per view, you can just turn of the Generic Model category.

I just tested again with linking a DWG inside an in-place generic model and you are correct that the link does not show up as an entry in the Imports list like if it is linked directly to the project.  But I can access the layers in the Imports in Families to change their visibility.

and you can still unload the entire link via Insert > Manage Links dialog:
