when exporting to ifc, single objects such as floors are split into into multiple components with duplicated ids, being these the original revit object's. see the example in the pics attached. In revit I only have on floor objects with one id, but in ifc, it has been split into multiple pieces, each with the same id (as per the original revit file) 

Is there a way to prevent this from happening by selecting/unselecting IFC export options in a particular way?

I do not think so. In IFC They appear as several separate meshes and therefore show up as separate elements. Because they originate from single object they will have same Revit ID (but still different IFC GUID).

What you can do is create separate floors in Revit.

Thought so too. hoped there would be a solution without having to 'touch' the original revit file, but doesn,t seem to be the case.
