Wall Based Cabinet Shrinks as wall thickens

Hi All,

I've been creating new cabinet families to calculate the approximate amount of material used per cabinet (pricing and its nice for the designers to actually know how the things are built).

Now i thought this cabinet was working great.... turns out it only works on a wall with a 3.5" stud and 1/2" drywall each side.... When the wall is any thicker the cabinet starts to shrink -_-

All most all the dimensions are locked. There are only 2 sizes needed which are set up. Yet when you place it on a 2x8 wall it shrinks approximately 2".

Anyone know how to fix this?

I would build it as a non-host casework family and nest it in a wall based family.  That's so you only need to constrain one side of the nested family to the wall.

jessicas - unfortunately im working in 2015 revit so cant open your family however have encountered the same (sort of-ish) problem with our door libraries where we want to report the wall thickness...... it may sound like a different problem however i think the solution may be the same......

we put and lock 2xreference planes - one to each of the outside edges of the wall. then everything that needs is locked to those reference planes which move with the wall thickness..... so that no matter what wall thickness the door is inserted in to it always remains in the correct 'plane' within the wall AND with a shared parameter label we can report the wall thickness with the door. try it?

ToanD - hmmm.. thats an idea. I'll see if I can easily copy and paste all the parts into a non wall based family....

T.davies - Thats also an idea.. I'll see if adding a few more planes and dimensions including the other face of the wall works

Attached is the revised family.  For the diagonal constraints, you need to use reference lines, not reference planes.  Still, a nested family would be a simpler approach.

Hello @Jessicas,

Your family is all good, you just missed one thing. you forgot to locked the angle for the reference adjacent to your angle width. (see image)

Locked that reference to became intact whenever the wall thickness changed.
