visiblity control of mass elements in plan views

One of the problems I keep coming across in my work is the fact that when I build a family with mass elements that are near ceiling level I cannot control their visibiblity in a easy way. Yes, I can create a special subcategory, and then hide it in the down looking plan view. But, hey guys, shouldn't this be automatic? Why do I need to see in solid lines elements that are above my cutting plane? And of course, if I uncheck the visibility in plan view I will not see the element in ceiling plan, where it needs to show. Well, it realy isn't such a big thing to ask: Please, Please, split the visibility option to down looking and up looking, or just do the right thing, i.e. - make sure that when you look down you don't see the mass elements that are above you...

Wouldn't that be great?!!!!

Those are the special families of Revit...some of these elements are subject to certain rules or better say defy certain rules...examples:

1. you will see some of these families even if they do not intersect with the cut plane. As long as they intersect with the upper range of the plan view they will show (MEP families for instance)
2. Some other families you can see even if the are below the lower bottom range of the view...ever wondered why floors show although when they are literally below and even a bit beyond... but suddenly when u change them to parts they lose that property
3. ...etc

why this behavior? The developers either got mixed up or they had those families designed for special purposes....can also be a bit of both! It is annoying but then again one gets used to it 🙂

Hi Yuri,

Thank you for your interest. I attach here a small file demonstrating the problem. See that in the 2nd floor plan the element from the floor above is hiding the one in the current floor. It is not possible to use the visibility parameter to hide via the family definitions since Autodesk were not clever enough to seperate floor plan from ceiling plan in this parameter. Please study this and see if you can offer a solution or else recommend to the R&D team to solve this.
