View filter not working on linked revit models for specific categories (bug?)

Hello,

We noticed some remarkable behaviour with view filters (currently working in Revit 2021, but this also occured in 2019).

We use view filters on shared parameters so the linked files also react to these filter settings (because they are set up with the same shared parameters).

If a filter is working for example only on Generic Models, this system works perfectly.

However, if a filter is set to work for the categories Generic Models and Rooms, the filter no longer works on the linked files (it does filter the main model elements).

The same behaviour is found when checking Analytical Categories, Zones, Spaces, Assemblies, and I can name a couple more.

Does anybody have experience with this? It seems like a bug, but maybe we are overlooking something.

(I can't share my files because of confidentiality, but if needed for explanation I could try to set up an example file/linked file)

Does the Shared Parameter exist in the Link? I mean, it sounds like you have a Rule-Based Filter that is looking for a particular Shared Parameter and not finding any matches in the Link.  No?

Those shared parameters do exist in the link. We found the solution however: the Project Parameter in the linked files needs to be applied to the categories you are checking in your view filter!

So in our example we tried to use a particular view filter on Generic Models and Rooms. The shared parameter used in that filter was assigned as a Project Parameter to both Generic Models and Rooms in our own model, but only to Generic Models in the linked file. When in our view filter only the Generic Model Category is selected, the filter works for both our model and the link. The second we select also Rooms as a category, the filter just stops working on the linked file.

So, basically what you are saying is that the Shared Parameter didn't exist in the Linked Project - at least in those Categories your Filter was looking for it in (e.g. Generic Models and Rooms).  That's exactly what I suspected. Your Rule-Based Filter was looking for a particular Shared Parameter and not finding any matches in the Link.

I love being right.  😊

There's no other way to look at it.

...hear that thumping sound?

That's the sound of me patting myself on the back.  😉

Simple solution - I haven't read all the solutions here, but for me, I just copy over the Family from the link and have it saved in my Family Tree. Or I create the Workset if it's Workset specific. This allows me to mess with the Filters like how we normally would.
