Using Revit to detail building framing

I am new to Revit having just taken the PLTW CEA class this past summer. I teach in vocational HS in Lexington, MA. I really don't use Revit enough to do some of the projects that have come up this year. So I need some help sorting out how to do very specific tasks.

Our carpentry shop has a shed design they need drawn in Revit. It requires views of the walls so that the framing can be seen. Object here is to be able to a material call out from the drawing: How many 2x4's are needed to build this wall with a window in it? And how do I create simple metal studded walls with a cross brace?

If you can guide me a bit through how to do these tasks, it will be greatly appreciated. Email me at paradisem1@gmail.com

I have loaded the framing and rafter extensions into v2018. Are there instructional videos on how to do these tasks? Appreciate the support.

Honestly, Revit is a bit overkill on something like this. The software would cost more that the actual materials to frame this two wall structure.  Although, finding a 1'-4" x 2'-11 1/2" hinged door might cost you a pretty penny.   Out of curiosity, is there a roof -- or just a gable-end wall?

These are SkillsUSA projects for our school. We already have the software. We build these as part of trying tomorrow’s carpenters. We need the drawings so each student can do estimations of materials and then actually construct them, the structure at least not the actual windows or doors.

Hi @Anonymous - as a past SkillsUSA Advisor and a regular Judge at State, I see exactly where it is that you are coming from.

There are two approaches to take - one is the 'pretend' method, the other is an actual model.

1) The 'pretend' method - Model the shed, draw the framing using hidden lines

2) The actual model - You can model the framing as extrusions, or as custom beams and column families. To see the framing through the walls, use the View>>Show Hidden Lines tool.

Both methods are correct and usable.

Regarding the extension that you mention - here is some information to get you started. I agree with @barthbradley - the framing extension especially is overkill for what you intend, and definitely well out of the reach of what the students at that level learn for SkillsUSA.
