typical floor MODEL

Hi everyone, I want to ask about groups. I know that if you have a building with typical floors a useful way to do it is to create the typical floor, then convert it to a group, and then link or copy the group to reach the high of the building. (this also helps if you change something, because it will change in all floor plans). Is this the best way to do it? Does anyone have any recommendation to work with groups?

* I have to model a building and all floor plan are the same. (Except the roof plan)

Hi, @Anonymous
Yes , the surrounding: parking lot, lobby and topography. Now I want to model the tower. I know that I can model each floor and it will take more time, so I want to try it in a more efficient way And I think it would be with link or groups. Because if I need to change something, I need to change in each floor...

Here’s what I’m trying to get across to you.  LINKS ARE NOT EFFICIENT in the way you want to use them – because, if you need to change something, you may need to unload and open and modify and save and reload a link.

Having said that: knock yourself out and LINK AWAY.

That is simply not true.  He can create the link as a central file so that when he opens the link as a local, Revit won't ask to unload it from the master file.  Or, he can simply start another Revit session and open the link should it not be a central file.  I work with more links than the hours in a day and never had to unload anything.

There are certainly drawbacks with using links but the above is not one of them.

It is true and you just made my point in another way.  Thank you.

Hi @ToanDN
So do you recommend to use links to model the tower? Or groups?

Hi @Anonymous

Why links are not efficient? So you recommend the use of groups?

It depends on how you want to document the project.  If you must document it in the master file then use Groups, if you can document typical units separately and combine the PDFs then you can use Links.

The main drawbacks with link are about documentation, especially scheduling, since it is very difficult to have different IDs for different instances of the same link.  There are also known bugs with tags of linked elements disappeared or shifted (though I have not experienced it but many have).

So, it is a case of pick your poison.

Aw... don't be shy.  We know you can learn new things.  And if you ever want to come back after some testing (which you likely are doing right now) and claim you discovering ways not having to unload links to edit them some ten years ago, then feel free.

What the heck, @ToanDN! Have you already been drinking on this Labor Day?! Dang; it ain't even noon PST yet!

Seriously though: are you not following the point I'm making to @Anonymous?  If so, I'll see if I can clear up the confusion after I have a few drinks to catch up with you.   Smiley Wink

I've read though the entire thread and I only see @Sahay_R has mad her point clear.  You, on the other hand, keep repeating your opinion without any explanations.  The only point you emphasized with a bold text is false and subsequently, irrelevant to the question why links are inefficient.

Look it @Anonymous; the way I'm reading this is that you are in the preliminary stages of design; that you haven't yet to determined how the Tower is constructed.  Before you break up the model, there's got to be a model to break up; that is, a determination made on how all the pieces fit together, so to speak.  I'm not discouraging Linking; I'm saying that Linking at this point in time is premature. Keep everything resident in the same project until you figure out how the geometries interact.

...does that meet with your approval, @ToanDN?  Or, do you wish to criticize me further.  I'm kinda new to this whole design thing with only about 25 years experience.  So, any input would be appreciated.

...I'll add that I have zero experience with 12-story construction that is not with beams and columns - just with walls - as @Anonymous has indicated her building is.

Hi @barthbradley

The building already finishes the design process. The tower will be built with walls.

Hi @ToanDN

Interesting what are you saying, the idea is to have the documentation in one file as possible. So, if I want to document is better to use groups (keeping in mind to not constraint the walls). If I want to use links, the documentation will be in separate files and at the end, I will need to group them. Am I right?  Any other suggestion?

FANTASTIC! That's a load off my mind; for sure.  Out of curiosity, what's supporting those walls.

@Anonymous - the main file will be able to string sheets from linked files together in the sheet list.

The walls support itself. So the people who buy the apartments must not destroy them or modify the spaces.
