Trying to export a plan or elevation with transparent background

This might be a daft question with a simple answer but I don't seem to be able to save an elevation or plan with a transparent background for importing into other software.  PNG files still have a white background and I cannot see anywhere that gives me the option.  Background setting choices are only None, Sky, Gradient or Image - nothing else.

Hope this can be done easily!

-In a 3D View, use Orient to View.

-Select the Plan or Elevation you want. Render. Export to .png.

-Import into post-editing app.

Ah, that's getting somewhere.  Didn't realise there was all those other settings when you right click on the view cube.  However, as I'm obviously still learning, a render produces a rendered image using the proper material, is there a way to alter this like you can with the Visual Style button?

Alter it how? You have virtually unlimited output options with renderings. Basically, renderings are subjective and we all know that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

As far as I can tell render is just a realistic image using the materials.  All I am after is exporting an image like below into Photoshop or other software so that I can create various background colours/effects, hence the need for transparent background and I don't need the realistic materials, just want to leave it on the current Visual Style setting.  The only 2 options I can think of are creating the Revit file with a pre-determined background colour that is the same as my presentation colour (so that it is a proper elevation image rather than using the ViewCube to create the required elevation view like you do if you need a rendered elevation image) but that means I need to use a solid colour as matching a gradient would be difficult, or having to go around the drawing removing all the white elements to leave a transparent background but that will take ages in Photoshop and I'm not certain it would look great either. 

I am attempting to create something like the bottom images to give you an idea as I might be going about this all wrong! So if you look at the bottom image the nice render is the background with its sky going behind the site plans and the plans/elevations are also see through on the middle image (white lines on a grey background)

Create one rendering with the transparent background and one non-rendered image of a shaded view or whatever visual style of your choice.  Open the rendering image in PhotoShop and get the boundary of the transparent background, copy it and paste onto the other image to scope out the background area to delete it.
