I opened a face based family today and the light fixture was hosted to the bottom of the default extrusion. I have never built any families this way before and I was wondering if there are any advantages I am not aware of.
It seems to behave just like all my other face based families do. But I could be missing something. Any insight would be much appreciated.

If the solid host is reversed so that the origin ref plane is at the bottom of it the it makes no difference other then the perception when editing the family.
I can see where it might be a PITA. If it makes you feel better, change the direction of host extrusion (positive to negative or vice versa) and the family geometry (e.g. the direction of offset of the Ref. Plane from the host face).
