The Best Way to Link A Survey File to A Site Model That Is Linked to A Building Model

I've got lots of help on linking a survey file to Revit model through the thread listed below, but today I have a few more questions.

  1. Acquire Coordinates - want to verify that before acquiring coordinates, I can move / rotate the survey file without messing up the coordinates? The correct coordinates will be brought into the model ONLY after acquiring coordinates? Since the site in survey file is quite far from the model and I was told to move the survey instead of the model.
  2. Since I have a building model and site model.  So after I link survey cad file into site model, how to make sure it will have the right relationship to the building? I saw one response in the thread below mentioned publish the coordinates. What is the right work flow when I already have the site model linked to the building model?
  3. I also received a XML file named TOPO besides Survey Dwg file, do I need the XML file and how to use it? First time run into XML file.

1. Yes.

2. Link the survey in the site model center to center, acquire coordinates. Link the site model in the building model, rotate and move to align with the building, acquire coordinates.

3. You only need the DWG or the XML, not both.

They were describing this workflow:

Help | Link a DWG File and Use Shared Coordinates | Autodesk

That would be my recommendation as well.

After I reloaded the site model to the building model, everything in the site model showed except the survey cad file? no workset issue, not sure what caused this?

You might have checked the box Current View Only when you linked the CAD file in the Site model.  If that is the case, redo it and make sure that box is not checked.

To confirm, open the Site model, select the CAD link and show its properties here.

you have to go to the Civil Model Link in the VG Overides,

  • in the Basic Tab, select Override display, and Custom
  • select the Imported Categories
  • select the Custom option
  • check the Civil DWG option.

attached is a short video on how to do this.

Yes I can tell it is linked without Current View box checked, which is good.  So it is the matter of turning it on in your project.  Can you show the view VGO?

- Does the view range capture the level where he survey DWG is placed?

- Go to Import tab and if they are turned on

You can create a view in the site model that appear exactly how you want, reload the site model in the building model, set the link display for the view to By Linked View and choose that view from the list.
