Tagging Stacked Walls

Good morning,

Team members have been reporting issues tagging stacked walls. When a stacked wall is tagged, it gives a blank tag that allows you to tag the entire stacked wall assembly, instead of the component parts separately, which would be more informative to the contractor. The workaround devised has been to duplicate the component walls and then tag separately.

Looking at old threads tells me that this has been a long standing concern. Has anything changed? Would it be possible to tag parts of a stacked wall separately without having to resort to cumbersome workarounds - which defeats the purpose of stacked walls entirely?

Edit -  see this when I ad tags in section (yes, I know, this is a funky looking wall, I just needed some walls that look entirely different)

In plan, however, Revit only shows the bottom wall.

Is there any way to see all the tags in plan as well?

In plan it tags the part7section where the cut plane cuts... this is not an issue this is the expected behavior (Tagging what Shows on the view...not what is above)...It is exactly similar to the case when not using stacked walls and you place walls per Level...would you be able to tag the wall on Level 2 when you are on Level 1? Logically No because one shouldn't Need to...Practically it is doable though via Workarounds ...same applies to stacked walls.

...Why would one to tag the part labeled 13 in a plan view cut at 1200mm above FFL while the Portion labeled 13 is at 2800mm above FFL or even at a different Level if that stacked wall would be an Elevation wall!!

Change the cut plane to ex: 2500mm high and you will be able to tag all what Shows bellow (what Shows; not overlap)

There are a couple of minor issues with tagging Stacked Walls but none is relevant to what you are refering to in your OP

Yes @RDAOU, you are right. However the contractor does need to see what is going on with the entire wall, not just what the cutting plane sees LOL! I have been playing with Plan Regions - does what I want, but then I can't hide the plan region. When I hide teh plan region, the tag also hides. GRRR.....

What contractors wish to see are not the software's Problem...besides it is Architectural drafting 101...The plan Shows what the sectional plane cuts!!!! A Plan view is a Section cut horizontally.

Stacked walls aren't any different than Basic walls stacked manually on top of each other so why should the Software treat them differently??? However; the Software does offer several Options to allow the user to work around that

...and from there on it is up to the SPECIALIST'S CREATIVITY.

Contractor gets a sheet? Overlay 3 or 4 or 5 views on that sheet tagging walls at 3 or 4 or 5 different Level (JUST AN EXAMPLE) ... I am pretty sure you can be more creative than that 😉

You already got one option with overlaid views of different cut planes Lol you are a demanding one! 

If u give the right section I can give u different methods based on ur stacked wall

I have been racking my brains all morning - can't seem to settle on a workaround that that would serve the purpose. Creating a 'dumb' tag that needs to be manually entered would be the obvious solution, but then you might as well be in AutoCAD. Duplicating the bottom wall and giving it a different type mark is just as bad. There has to be a better way to tag stacked walls, and if there isn't, there should be.

Well in such case, when someone says "no for a workaround" or whatever doesn't go with one click option is classified under mehhh workarounds; I say then there is no space for neither an argument nor discussion...

A workaround is a solution; how clever it is depends on the person and how creative and skillfull he is. That being said I guess it would be uselesd to say u can use Dynamo to extract the tags input from the wall an write it back into a tag-able Parameter/label in Revit cuz a workaround that serves the purpose isn't (in ur opinion a solution)

The only solution left in such case is for you to post your wish/idea on Revit Idea station and hope it gets voted up high enough to be considered for review by Autodesk dev Team

How exactly do you want the tag(s) to look? Three stacked on top of each others the same way the wall stacked? A long single tag to include the information x 3?

Yes, please. Possibly a long tag giving 3 (or whatever) pieces of information.

Currently we are duplicating the bottom layer, and giving a it's own mark. That seemed to be the easiest workaround, though I do not think that it utilizes all the capabilities of Revit..

Another workaround is add a Plan Region to cut the wall at the top part.  There, you can tag all the walls with separate tags.  Put them next together or on top of each others as you see fit.  Use linework tool to fix the wall cut/ non-cut line in the Plan Region area so that they look the same as the rest.

Not the software's problem? How clueless is that? We do what we do so someone can build it. Typically that someone is a contractor. They're the ones that need the information. If the software doesn't serve the end user's needs, then change the software.

Architectural drafting 101? How clueless is that? Architectural drafting has nothing to do with computers and view regions. That's a modern invention imposed by the limitations of software engineers. 

Whether the wall is uniform from plate to plate or is an assembly with multiple finishes or details, the "tag" should be able to reference the assembly, which would then be further detailed or defined somewhere in the plan set. What Ms Sahay is asking for is perfectly reasonable. Your attitude is not. I suggest you read your own "food for thought". However if this is an example of your sense of humor... try to avoid being funny.

One can always work around anything, but it's the software designers job to anticipate these perfectly reasonable needs and standard work flows. We shouldn't have to work around their concept of how we do our job.

Dear Ms. Sahay,

How you can be patient with trolls like RDAOU is beyond me - clearly he's over caffeinated.

Hopefully you have resolved this by now, but for the sake of future generations.. .there is another and perfectly easy way to deal with defining wall types and getting this critical information to the builder. 

What I do is give all my walls with a simple Type Mark code e.g. "EX1" or "INT1". I then create a drafting view with text notes that lists all the various wall types and the details of each. Such as Plt ht / stud type and grade / interior and exterior finishes, etc. I then place this drafting view on my "Wall Type Plan" sheet and the contractors can refer to this for detailed information about every wall in the structure.

Since stacked walls won't TAG the way a basic wall will, just create a tag looking thing manually as a group and copy it as many times as needed. It's still a work around but it's easy and effective.

You could also just create a sheet of typical wall section views and detail each wall type whether basic or stacked.

Hi..

It seems tough to pick the wall tags when the wall is not showing up in the plan.

I feel you can use a custom wall tag, add /edit " comment" and use that in 

Custom wall tag.

" Mark " + "

Type Comment "

Below it shows using custome wall tag..

1. Top : Actual wall ex: 9BB ( Mark )

2. below : Part of Stacked wall " 9BB/13/5R" (Type Comment)

Pls not that " 9BB/13/5R " this info/text needs to be added manually for each wall ( in Type Comment ) but

it does the job I guess..

Why can't a stacked wall get it's own unique Type Mark, which is then explained/detailed in the Wall Type Schedule and Typical Wall Sections?

@ToanDN - that is workable, but it involves a couple extra steps that would not be popular with users.
