stuck in "modify" mode

I'm currently in a drawing in Revit 2012 and can not exit "modify: mode.  The ribbon does not display the checkmark or "X" to exit. I've cycled through different ribbons but can't exit.

I cannot find hot fix but ctrl + z can exit edit mode.

I had this problem using Revit 2020 which appeared stuck with a yellow screen while editing a detail group. It turns out that the small group editor popout menu (Add, Remove, Finish) was on another screen out of view. Once I saw it, I moved it back in view and could click close or Finish.
