I have done another post about a failure, but can anyone tell me why its not allowing me to click the connection tab?

...well, judging from what you've shown here, you have nothing for Revit to connect. Before trying to connect something, you need to pull it out of your brain and put it in Revit. Someday, Revit will be able to read our minds, but we're not there yet.

The Connection drop down arrow under the Structural heading does not always work.  Most of the time it says a serious error has occurred and then Revit crashes.  That is what I was getting at!!!

Calm down Darren; we don’t read minds here. We can offer direction based only the information at hand. Unfortunately, your question – “can anyone tell me why it’s not allowing me to click the connection tab” – provides no information whatsoever (e.g. what the heck is “IT”? What “CONNECTION TAB” are you referring to?).

This isn’t Twitter, so you don’t need to follow the “140 character or less” format when posting on this forum. So, please feel free to be more descriptive of your issue in the future.

Thank you for taking your time to post on the forum, 

If you have issues with specific plugins I would recommend you first of all make sure to have the latest Revit update installed and then run a repair on the given plugin - it might require a reinstall. If you still experience issues afterwards let me know and I'll be more than happy to take a look at it,

Thanks for the reply.  My issue isn't with a plug in ( I don't think ).  It relates to the Connection tab under the Structural heading not working.  All I did below was click on the little down arrow of the `connection` tab and this error message appears. It is quite random.  Sometimes it works, others not all all.

Yeah it's a pretty generic error message, 

And have you always had it appear? I would recommend you try and run Revit clean without all the third party applications and plugins - I noticed you have a few. Check the guidelines below,

• How to disable add-ins for Revit
• Same thing goes for extensions through the path below or rename the folder:
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Extensions 2017 - adding ".bak" at the end.

You obviously wouldn't want to disable Steel Connections so you should leave that in the folder,

Worked perfectly for me.

Try cleaning out your locals and temp files, recycle bin and then rebooting your machine.

Which Steel Connections file/folder are you referring to?  I have moved all of the files as you can see but don't get the steel connections options at all.  Note that when I first click on the structural connections tab I get a warning message which when I close then the connection option box opens up ( empty ).  I have just moved back the RVTSteelConnectionsUI file back into 2017 add ins and I cannot get the Connection tab to work at all now.  Keeps coming up with the error message of serious failure....any ideas guys? 

As to the question have I always had it, unfortunately I am new to Revit and so only just doing my first building with a steel frame so not had need to use it before.  I am noticing that even just saving the project is getting more and more troublesome as I keep getting a `sharing violation` error message preventing me from saving.  Sometimes I just keep clicking save it and it eventually works, other times the first I click save it works.  Other times if I slightly zoom out a bit and click save that works.  Very random and very frustrating.  Should I uninstall and restart from fresh? Will I lose anything if I do?

Darren - first of all as long as your file is saved, you can uninstall and reinstall ALL you want and you won't lose anything! Unless you install an older version of Revit, of course- Revit is not backward compatible

Have you cleaned your drive as I had suggested and rebooted first? What did not work on your machine worked on mine - which tells me that cleaning out my machine and rebooting it this morning worked. Try that, first.

Can I delete every file in the Temp folder - never done that before so a little nervous!

Where would I find the Local folder?

On your computer click on the Start button.

In the Search window type in %temp%

This will bring up the Temp folder. Delete all the files in there. The easiest way would be to Shift-click on the first file, hold down Shift, scroll to the last file, and then Shift-click again. Sometimes the delete process will stop because of an open file - you need to click Skip to continue with the delete.

Are you working on workshared / networked file? If not, then all you would need to do would be to get rid of backups. Backups have numbers at the end of the file name. Keep 1-2 of the newest backups, delete the rest. Clear Recycle Bin. Reboot. Let us know how it works.

Thanks, that seems to have worked.  Structural connection drop down arrow works fine.  We will see if it works tomorrow as well!!
