Split surface topo to create yard from graded region

Hi,

I have created a Graded Region from an existing topo. The existing topo is in the Existing Phase and the graded region I created is in the New Construction Phase. I then added a building pad in the New-Phase topo and I am confident that the resulting Topo Schedule is giving me the results I expect. So far, so good ....

Next I want an external yard outside of the building pad to be created and manipulated. So, here's my question; Do I have to split the topo surface in the existing (original) topo and then create another graded region or do I split the surface on the newly-created graded region ?

I create a single Graded Region from an existing topo, and then I user the Split Surface tool to divide it into the distinct areas I will want to manipulate and schedule.

For example...

1st Split Surface = building pad area

2nd Split Surface = front yard

3rd Split Surface = back yard

4th Split Surface = city drainage easement

...or whatever. You can give each Split Surface a Mark value and a Name value, and tag and schedule the various areas as you see fit, each with their own cut/fill measurements calculated from the original Existing topo. Then you can set the schedule up to give you totals on the cut/fill columns too.

Know of a way of graphically showing the cut and fill as coloured 3-D 'masses' so you have a 3-D view representing those areas that have been cut and those that have been filled ? thanks

I don't know...never tried that.

But I do need to correct what I said before...if you make a Building Pad, Revit automatically ALSO makes a new Split Surface around it. So it AND the surrounding yard should automatically become two distinct entries on the schedule. You could further divide the yard into front and back or whatever, but my point is that you don't have to use the Split Surface tool to separate out a building pad, because Revit takes care of it automatically.

The answer depends. What's the purpose of the Split Surface? Are you wanting to pull cut/fill data?

If so, Split Surface has this "peculiar" behavior you should be aware of:

If I understand you correctly, you can achieve this through Phase Filters (e.g. Show Demo + New).

Thank you everyone for your help. yes, I think once one has created a graded region from an existing topo, you have to think carefully about why you are splitting the surface. I hindsight, I have concluded it is best to not split the surface of my graded region, because I want to make sure that my new levels blend with the existing.
