Sizing Walls

Hello All,

I had modeled my design in autocad before I started designing it in revit. I had all the dimensions perfect in autocad.  I am teaching myself revit and started doing the floorplan using the wall function in revit. After I have spent over 50 hours on this trying to figure out all of revits functions, I realized that the dimesioning does not work the same as auotcad, so now all of my overall dimensions are off. For example, I wanted a wall to be exactly 15' 4" from the outside of the building, since I am using 8" masonry in revit changes the dimension to 16'-8 1/4". This is so frustrating because now my building does not fit into my property lines, any advice on what I am doing wrong?

I have determined that it is because it measures from the centerline, so any advice on how to account for this or change the setting?

Even in this picture, I made this wall 15'4 and it changed it to 15'-11 3/8

Are you talking about the Temporary Dimensions?

Read this:

Specify Temporary Dimension Settings | Revit | Autodesk Knowledge Network

...also, drill down into this Link:

Temporary Dimensions | Revit | Autodesk Knowledge Network

...or are you could be talking about the Unit Precision that the Dimension Type is using?

Autocad vs Revit. The Autocad dimensions are what I am trying to achieve, but when I type in those numbers when doing the walls I get these dimensions instead

I don't understand. Are you saying the walls in Revit are exactly the same as the walls in AutoCAD, but that they are not showing the same dimensions. I don't see how that is possible. Post the RVT and DWG here as an Attachment to a Reply Post.

Yes, when drawing the walls I put in 15'4 and it spits out the 16' length when I start joining the other walls to it, and okay I will post a reference file.

They are not the same.

Here's your DWG Linked into Revit.  The DWG is RED in the screenshot.

When you "type the dimensions"?

Like this?

As you can see in the above screenshot, I'm having no issues "typing" in dimension value.

Looking at your Revit and your dwg...it appears that you went flat out on walls placing them using Location Line at wall Centerline...Next time you are placing walls chains by typing in Dimensions (Similar to what you would do in Autocad)...it might be more convenient to .

  1. use Location Line at Finish Face
  2. When you type in length, type in 15 space 4 ... no need for the ' & "

It is sad that you will have to resize all at this stage

Just as an FYI: these symbols indicate the exterior face of the wall (which is currently oriented towards the interior). If you press it, you can change the wall's  orientation.

If you are hitting Space bar somewhere in between...you will be flipping the exterior to the inside (Space is Autocad for Enter ... Revit it is Enter for Enter)...so when you hit spacebar, watch out to witch side the Exterior Face of the wall is oriented
