Show Hidden Lines on the linked model for specific elements.

Hi Everyone,

In the section view, I would like to see the structural frames behind the wall as image-1. They are curtain mullion and I need to see them dashed lines. The model is linked. So I cannot use the "show hidden line" tool. Is there any way to show only "curtain mullions e.g." on hidden lines?

2 options.

If if it's all Curtain Wall Mullions in that view, you can go into the VG override for that view and change the project lines to a hidden line type.  Assuming the link wasn't changed to be custom and follow what's set up in the main model.

If if it's just the linked elements you want to change you'll need to do that in the VG override for that link.

Go into the VG settings, select the linked models tab, select the Link, Change to custom and then adjust the project lines for curtain mullions to be a different line type.

The mullions are not shown. They are behind the wall. I want to show them. And there are more than a thousand section view like that. I will create a view template and I will apply for all. But I want to see only curtain mullions behind the wall, not the other elements.

If I have only a few sections you are right. But I have thousands section view.

Then I think you're looking at trying to make your walls transparent in the template which brings up a bunch of potential other issues.

You could try setting the link to be set up based on a view and not custom.  I think I've gotten that work in the past.

Underlay would be the other option.  

Without looking at your exact model set up, it's a little hard to pin point the best solution as there's a lot of options.

Just tested it in 2019

Set the link to underlay.

If there's other categories you don't want to see, you'll need to turn those off.

Then adjust the VG of the model link so projection lines have a different pattern.

Well then, Show Hidden Lines wouldn't worked either, if it was a capability. Basically the same workflow.  Are the Mullions in the Link fully Visible in the View when the Parent Project Wall is Hidden?

Duplicate the view, turn off everything except for the linked curtain mullions, set the category to Hidden line pattern, 100% transparent, and place the view on the same sheet/location as the original view.

The issue: we are preparing wet areas wall elevations. On the wall of the wet areas, we are using ceramic and painted glass finishes. These wall finishes have substructure behind them. The consultant wishes to see them with dashed lines. If I make the wall transparent, I will see everything in the section view range. It is not a solution. I want to see the only substructure that is curtain mullion family behind the wall. I need a way to show only hidden curtain mullions. And for information: Sheet model is separated. The main models have been linked to the sheet model. So all of the model elements are one of the linked model elements.

The one way is

-duplicate all of the sections

-isolate curtain mullions in duplicated views. And change that mullions lines as dashed lines

-overlap these two sections' views.

But I need an easier and quicker way.

Yes, this is the way that I only find. But as I said there are thousands of views. And I need an easier way to apply all of the views at the same time using a template.

Yes you create one view isolating the linked mullions with settings as desired and make a view template from it and assigned to all other 'mullion' views.

You mentioned in the original post that the elements were in a linked model and not in the original. 

Is the wall in front of it also in the same linked model?

If not, all you need to do is change your template for those views so the Link with the curtain wall mullions is set to underlay in the VG Override.

If the block wall that's in front of the structural "mullions" that you're looking to show dash is in the same model, you can always make a copy of that model and place another instance.  Then Leave the VG for the original as it is.  For that view, set the duplicate to only those the things you want to see and set to underlay.  

Setting to underlay will allow you to see the stuff beyond.

In this example i'm showing the structural model beyond the exterior wall as a red dashed lines.
