Shared coordinates and copying elements

Good morning

I have two files/models with shared coordinates and I am trying to copy elements from one model level 1 plan view to the same coordinates in the second model also level 1 plan view using the clipboard but for some reason element being copied does not land at the same coordinates

Any ideas?

Hi

Copy/Paste won't work unless you open both models in the same same session. Even though, Paste Aligned to Same Place still won't work, but Aligned to same View will.

If what you're trying to copy is a wall, column or floor, you can use the Copy/Monitor tool in Collaborate tab, and stop monitoring later if you don't need to.

I am not sure what you are trying to copy between model but if you need that element to drop at the same coordinates Aligned to Current View (Similar to Align to Selected Views/Levels) DOES NOT apply to pasting an element at the same coordinates/place. Those options only paste to an aligned view meaning same type of view (ie: from plan view to callout plan view or to the same view on a different level...as long as the view it is being pasted into is not the same view it is copied from)...What you need is Align to SAME PLACE (for pasting to exact same coordinates) and that works if you do the following:

This method works for all elements namely those not covered by the Collaborate > Copy/Monitor tool; such as In-Place elements, Families, Annotations, Site Components and Design Options

  1. Since you have already setup the shared coordinates >> Insert/Load/Reload the Link with shared coordinates into the Host model (required to enable and use Align to Same Place)
  2. Use TAB key to select the element(s) you need to copy from the Linked model
  3. Use Ctrl + C to copy to clipboard
  4. Paste Aligned to Same Place (SEE AUTODESK KNOWLEDGE NETWORK REFERENCE HERE) (it is enabled because you have linked the model in)
  5. Once done; you are free to unload the Link

For Grids/Levels/Walls/Floors/Roofs/Openings and Columns (except slanted columns)

When you have already set up shared coordinates for Host and Link, best would be to use the collaborate feature of Revit ... The normal "Collaboration" workflow would be:

  1. Activate Copy/Monitor (Coordinate Panel > Collaborate tab)
  2. click Select Link
  3. Pick the Linked model
  4. On the Copy/Monitor tab, click the Copy button (either Single or Multiple depending on number of elements to be copied)
  5. Pick the Column(s)
  6. Click Finish on the copy/monitor "Option Bar" (close any warnings)
  7. Click Finish on the Modify|Copy/Monitor tab in the Ribbon to exit mode
  8. Once you are done; you can stop monitoring them

Copy/Paste utilizes a Windows OS feature so it doesn't not take into account Shared Coordinates. It will only paste the copied elements using the project's own origin as a reference. Include (or add a line you can use) something in the copied selection set you can use to place the pasted elements accurately after they appear in the model.

See Screencast Below...

All you need to do is do it the way it is supposed to be done...You have already shared coordinates and Revit recognizes those (You don't really need any other elments or lines to make it more accurate). Refer to AUTODESK KNOWLEDGE NETWORK source HERE - ELEMENTS TO COPY/MONITOR and HERE - COPY PASTE LINKED ELEMENTS USING CLIPBOARD

Keep this method in mind when you get to Design Options...it will come in handy

My response was aimed at the notion that the files were both open and trying to use Copy/Paste between them. The notion of Paste Aligned Same Place isn't possible in that scenario.  I got the impression that using TAB to select something visible in a link and using Copy/Paste in that context wasn't what the original post was about.

@SteveKStafford I'm sorry...I hope you do forgive me but I don't understand what you mean! I was just asking how to make the copy paste from clipboard work properly in a shared coordinates environment and get things copied from the link to the host using that option "to same place" my mistake was that I didn't know that shared coordinates work only with the linked file closed and loaded into the host...

thank @RDAOU for  detailed clarification and @SteveKStafford for making me notice that when the link is not loaded and c/p done strictly in the host model shared coordinates has no effect and Windows clipboard is what is doing the work and the mess

If you are copying between files and one of them is linked into another then the techniqe @RDAOU described in his screencast is quite effective. It allows you to use Copy/Paste from the linked file into the host file and place the copied object(s) to the same location in the host.

If you are using copy/paste between separate files that are not linked to each other then copy/paste doesn't acknowledge a shared coordinate system between files. It is necessary to include some kind of marker that helps you relocate the copy once it is placed in the active project. I usually use a line that starts at a common location I can refer to in both files, like a grid intersection. I use Copy/Paste...move the pasted elements into position by snapping the endpoint of my marker line to the same grid intersection. Then I finish placing the pasted elements and delete the line.

The Copy to Clipboard > Paste Aligned Same Place (PASP) is designed to work inside the same project file. For example, let's imagine I need to create two floor elements in a location where I have one overall floor now, to represent how it will be poured and show where the control joint will be. I can use PASP on the original floor and then edit its boundary to change its overall size. I then edit the floor boundary of the original floor to reduce its size to correspond with the new floor's boundary.
