probably a simple thing but when i start drafting a model i start in the middle of the relevant floor plan but when i come to the elevations the height markers are at varying distances from the model and if i drag them into position it messes up the heights, how should i be doing this?

One way is highlight the levels, right click and choose maximize 3d extent.

Drawing a scope box around the plan and then assigning the levels to the scope box can help as well.  As a resource to help you understand the positions of levels and grids in views you can take a look at these videos.

I find the scope box the best approach.
