Selecting Objects from Linked AutoCad File in Revit

Hello:

I have an AutoCad 3D model file linked into Revit and am trying to select objects and cannot do so. I wanted to select the objects which are linked and create a schedule or tag for each one with volumetric information, etc.

I also tried to import the file into Revit without a link but had problems as the geometries disappeared.

I have been searching the internet and have not found a solution.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Linked Files are symbolic and not native Revit elements. Tags only work on native elements. You could import DWG into Revit family templates and then tag those. You'd have to break up the DWG into unique pieces that you want to tag though.

Another possible approach is to have those files created as IFC exports instead. Revit will convert the IFC into native elements in a Revit project file which might yield slightly more useful elements.

Steve:

I was able to create generic model families of the objects and bring them into the Revit file.

Now I am having problems tagging them. Which tag should I use which will have overall length, width, and height dimensions and volumetric information as well? Revit asks for me to load a tag for general models.

Please advise.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Tags are associated with a category, in this case you'd need to create/use one for Generic Model. Then you have to choose which parameter value you want the tag to display.

Steve:

The Generic Model Category does not have a parameter for dimensions or volume.

What are my other options? I have attached the Revit files and AutoCad file which was imported for your review.

I tried importing the AutoCad file into a Structural Column Model Category, but it did not quite work. I know that this category has tags which have parameters for dimensions and volume. I honestly do not care what category the imported files go in. I just need the tag information to create a schedule, etc.

Let me know what you are thinking.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Each category as you've realized has its own collection of parameters based on how they are used within Revit. Since the data you're describing is based on fixed DWG entities that are not going to vary (parametrically) you can create your own parameters to store the values you want to include in a schedule. You have a couple options:

Project Parameters: These can be created in the project and can be assigned to one or more categories. Then each family (of the chosen category(ies)) in the project will have this parameter available to display in a schedule. This allows you to store fixed data in each relevant family, but without having to add it to each family itself outside of the project. If you schedule these families you will likely need to filter out families that you don't want to include with your DWG based elements. Filtering is based on parameters too so it could be as simple as filtering based on the type name you use, making sure to a unique name or prefix that makes all your DWG based families unique for the schedule.

Family Parameters created from Shared Parameters: These parameters are defined in each family separately but from a shared parameter file (think dictionary, where parameter definitions are stored). You create a new parameter in each family and browse to a Shared Parameter file (dictionary) and select a parameter (the defined "word"). Shared Parameters are able to be tagged as well as schedule in the project environment, which makes them much more valuable/flexible...though slightly more work.

You can also create a project parameter based on a shared parameter definition.

This is sort of making sense to me. I am only a 'intermediate' Revit user. I mostly use it for construction documents and detailing at work. The worksets, templates, etc. are mostly set up by others.

Are there any website links or YouTube videos you can send me so that I can take myself through the process?

Please let me know.

Thanks again for your assistance.

I took a look at your files. That's a pretty simple form to make in Revit. One extrusion for the base, a blend extrusion for the upper section and a void to cut the holes in the base. If you have other experienced Revit users in the office they could knock this kind of thing out pretty quickly.

As for a video about working with parameters a quick search on You Tube will provide quite a number of them, not to mention the documentation at Autodesk itself.

Thank you for the response.

So, I am currently not working in an office. It is just me. I will look for YouTube videos and let you know how I do.

Thanks again for your assistance.
