Segmented Curved Profile in Railing Family

Continued from https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/need-alternative-for-curved-path-on-line-bas...

If I use the railing feature to make the curved park bench, I can make the main profile and the green one. How about the red one? This wood plank, beside need to follow the curve path, also need to be segmented, how can I use profile for that?

you can try this, usually i export to autocad (plan and section view) and  import cad into family, use a Metric Generic Model.rft trace over the plan using extrusion and for the support i use sweep. modeled them as whole and load as a family. easiest way. thanks

Thanks for the reply. If I use extrusion for wood plank, so it means, I need to make each family for each bench, then the use of railing trick will become useless. And also, the section and plan details is for reference only, I need to generate on each bench by myself. There will be several benches which have different path for each bench.

Use a generic model adaptive template. This will be, let's say, "Family 1". In this family, create a spline with 3 points (or 4). Separately, make "Family 2", a generic model family, work-plane based, not always vertical, and draw a flat closed shape with model lines. "Family 2" will be your profile. Load "Family 2" into "Family 1". In "Family 1", create a reference point somewhere along the spline. Now, create an instance of "Family 2", and place it by workplane. Set the workplane to be one of the planes of the new point, the plane that is perpendicular to the spline. Put "Family 2" there. Now, select both the spline and "Family2", and do Create Form. Now, select the 3 or 4 points of the spline and do "Make Adaptive". Load "Family 1" into a project, click 3 or 4 points in a plan view, and now you have a family that can make multiple benches with different shapes and the same profile.

Thanks for the reply, I got half of the idea, is this method referring to the procedure in making the wood plank, or the bench?

It is workable with railing. Each other those slats are baluster and you can configure the spacing to get the look you want.

Thanks! This will do. Actually the space is 5mm, so if I put the slat as baluster with 5mm spacing, it could be clashed with another if the curve too circled. But this trick will do as time being.

I find railing to be very flexible. The slat will overlap with other but it won't completely destroy your railing. If you want to download sample of the railing I did, you can download from this website. Check it out how I built the baluster family to fit your requirement.

Edit: Oh, I didn't see your reply, will try yours first.

Edit 2: Yeah, I saw your model, and because the consultant wants me to make the gap only 5mm, then the clash will happen using this way.

If the consultant wants 5mm gap, then I would make the baluster as gap and the seat as continuous railing.

Interesting! So, the baluster extrusion painted as black? with 1mm thickness?

Correct. That way you get the effect.

Great effect, but now I'm having difficulties in modifying the railing structure. I've put the Gap, the size is bigger than the wood plank, but its only working for the top side, on the vertical side, it looks like forced cut, even I already make it extended to the bottom. Am I missing something?

Upload baluster family so I can take a look. Most likely if you attached to the baluster height, it will flex with the railing base and top host.

Ah, I got it, a little bit experiment, it's working now, I manipulated the baluster family, I attached the baluster height to the another thing that would be "forced cut" by Revit. But I don't know, is this the true method, or I did the railing wrong all the way here. Open to get suggestion.

I look at baluster. You may want to create nested family so it won't interfere with the baluster parameter. As well I added Offset top and Offset bottom for flexibility incase your gap won't respect your regular offset value.

But the shape is still need to be manipulated like that? Okay, got it. Thanks for the detailed answer!
