on the left bottom of your screen near the drawing scale there is detail level button. Set it to fine

Structural column and beam families show as stick symbols in Coarse detail level.  You can change the View detail level to Medium or Fine as suggested by @Anonymous.  But if you need to keep the view as Coarse for any reasons, then change the Structural Column and Framing categories to Medium or Fine in VG.

I am also annotating an my views on A3 sheet and putting text. How do I change the font size and the font text? I tried researching online but what I see seems to be about families.

Just type a note, select it and Edit Type from Properties.

Another question I added a new component to my project but my schedule hasn't updated to show it. My schedule looks filled out at the moment(i.e. no blank rows, so do I need to add another row, if so how?)

You should just select text and duplicate new or modify the one you picked. all attributes for fonts like size, opaque or transparent or so on are in the text property window.

What kind of element is? and can you please give more details of the situation. If it probably is under correct category of families and objects it should be in schedule and you do not need to do it manually.

And one more thing, you said you are adding annotation on sheet, but it is better not to do it on sheet space. Do it on model space and insert your view with full annotations on sheet. If by annotation you mean some text and so on not elements tag and keynotes. Because automatically those are in model space an you can not add them on sheet or it is better to say on deactivated view on sheet.

Yes it is text. So you're saying that I should put text on the views. And then transfer those views with the text to my A3 sheet. That is fine not a problem, I will try and copy and paste it. Out of interest, what is the advantage of doing that?

Not actually. The purpose of annotation is to give more description to elements which are in model. We should complete annotation when we work on Floor plan, Section , Elevation and Detail view. Then we create a sheet and then place a completed view on sheet or after placing you can activate your view by double click on it and add your annotation and again deactivate the view. Please do not copy and paste on sheet. I hope this is helpful.

There are some other things you should take care of. First, check whether it is a column or structural column then what type of parameter you defined for a column generally in your model like family type, size, type mark and so on. Then if you do need a specific parameter just define a new one and assign it to schedule and should be fine. I believe they do not show up in schedule because you did not assign a proper parameter to schedule. And if you want to add linked columns to your host file schedule just check the box for include linked. Check these and we will see if there is anything else.

Size: 305x165x40 - since I edited the values of the initial family to make it into the sizes it is now.

Type mark: blank (nothing there)

How do I tell if I need a specific parameter? If I did I think I would go to schedule, go to fields under schedule properties and then find what specific parameter is needed?

Some of parameters are in by default setting but sometimes you need more of them as you go for your project. If you need the volumetric information for casting concrete and the estimation you need the volume parameter or if you need just a size like width and depth you should look up for it in field and if there is not a parameter you can define it by adding a new parameter for column family in manage tab. You can follow some videos and tutorial from Autodesk help or Mastering in Autodesk Revit book or Lynda tutorial. It is not complicated, when you do it you are going to love it because it is completely under your control to schedule things in project model.

I tried to think through what you said. 

I concluded that I am not missing a single parameter which I need. I deduced that the parameters I needed where only those that were the row headings of my schedule as shown in the video. 

My column has all of these, since it has the volume, the last two are calculated from the volume.

I also concluded that the only thing different is my family type at the moment it is Structural Columns.

So what I really need is a way to change this column family type to Generic Models or change my schedule to be accepting of the Structural Column family type. I think this is where the problem lies.

Thanks for the recommendations I will see if there are any which relate to what we are dealing with here.

Also what is the whole idea behind adding linked columns to host file? Also what does the term host file mean.

I also followed your instruction by going to my schedule then clicking on properties in the toolbar, clicking on fields and ticking the checkbox that said at the side of it: 'Include elements in links'

Not sure of the benefit of this or where to go from there

Do not worry about link and host, I just said it as an extra for your future reference in other project file in case and you do not have a linked model in your file so just forget it for now. And for your columns please try to tag your columns by Type mark and see if they show up in schedule. Or if it is possible for you I can help you if you send me a copy of your file (but my version is Revit 2017) then I can delve in your file to find out and let you know what cause this.

I am a bit of a new learner to Revit. So I am not too sure, I deduce that Family Mark changes the family type. So if I put in Family Mark of Column 'Generic Models' and then go to my schedule it should be there?

OK. You created a family type of 4 column together. It is not a good idea. First of all, please look at the file I have attached it is in version 2017 BTW.

You should use standard column and insert them to your project file or if you want to create a new shape for column use the right family type and follow the rules to create one. In Revit it is not possible to generate something in the way we want and get a good result. Revit actually is not a 3D program it is a smart BIM program. So, clean your mind from an image of Revit first and then you should learn the program logic, then it is easy to create a bunch of custom family types. Your custom columns do not sit on right centre location and ...
