Save project as family

Is there a way to save a project to a family?  I created a generic model in a project, but now I need to use it in several other projects.  The model is fairly detailed, so I don't really want to rebuild it, but I can't find a way to save it as a family so I can load it into my other projects.  Any suggestions?

There are several options provided as to how you can convert a model, and test if it can be inserted into another project.

If you have a Component Model in Place and you want to turn it into a Component Family so to can use it later in other projects,you have to make the following steps:

• first , select the Model in Place Model > Edit in Place
• in Edit in Place , select all the subcomponents and make them Group
• stil in Edit in Place, select the Group and from Application Menu ( R) > Save As > Library > Group > Save Group - you will see that you have the option to save as File Type : .rfa  - save it into a folder
• Finish model 
• from Application Menu (R) > Open > Family > open the new created family - you can then load into any Project

I have seen numerous blog posts etc. that detail the Component In Place > Group > Save As > Library > Group workaround.  It seems to work from many people, but not at all for me.

I have an object made up of 4 separate model-in-place extrusions.  I have made a model group from these pieces and named it in my project.

 However, when I get to the Save As step, I have zero option to make the new file a .rfa Family.  I can only make it a .rvt Project.  I have no other options.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks in advance.

The title of this thread is confusing. It should be something such as "Can I save a model in place as a loadable family?" That's what I understand from the solution. However, the title says "Save project as family", and then the user asks about a "generic model", and the answer refers to an in-place model. So, the question, the title, and the answer don't align. It is confusing to see a solution marked for a question entitled "Save project as family".

When you make the Component Model In place , you must make all in one Component (under One Name) even if there are more Extrusion, sweeps and other shapes.Join them together working only in one Component. Do not make more Components and then join them.

Without Finishing Model , make Group and Save As> Group -  the option of saving will be for .rfa

Hi, Alfredo, and thanks for the prompt reply.  What you are describing is exactly what I'm trying to do.

I have a custom casework piece that is modeled in place within the larger house project, as a model group of in-place components.  For a variety of reasons I would like to export or convert that M-I-P group into a family.  I tried using the method described above, but when I get to Step 3 ( the "Save As > Library..." step) I have no option to save the group as a family, just as a project.  Clicking the little "File Types" drop-down gives me only the .RVT option.

Ah, OK, thank you, Constantin.  I had done each piece as a separate component and grouped them.

I don't see it as confusing at all.  I have a file, the file type is a project.  I want to make it into a family so I can use it in other projects as a family.  The problem is that the directions here don't work.  How do you take a project that has families in it and turn the whole thing into a family?

You can do it if these families can be placed inside an in-place family.  What sort of families are they?

When i am going to save the file as Rfa file the only option showing is RVT. Could you please help me as how to convert it to a family file?

As Constantin explained:

Without Finishing Model , make Group and Save As> Group -  the option of saving will be for .rfa

So if you've already created and finished you In-Place family, first select your in-place family, then edit it in place and then make & save the group while editing. Then you will have an option to save RFA. If you aren't editing you'll get only RVT option.
