Hello, I hope someone can help me.

 

Attached is a family which I want to have a rotating element on it. I have tried with just detail lines, with reference lines & detail lines, with reference lines and extrusions, and with a revolve. I have not been able to figure out how to get this thing working.

 

The element I'd like to rotate is the hook currently located within a group in the Right view plane near the base point intersection. I need that hook to keep its shape and length but rotate about the base point intersection of this family. Once I can get it rotating I intend to make an extrusion based on the detail lines in the Right view plane that I hope will successfully follow the angle of the detail lines. 

 

Any help on how to get this extrusion flexing while keeping its proper shape would be greatly appreciated. 

 

EDIT: for some reason it won't accept my attachment giving the error "The attachment's tr02-01.rfa content type (application/octet-stream) does not match its file extension and has been removed." I've made a Google Drive link as an alternative.

Zip to a ZIP extension, not RAR, not 7z. Not everybody uses 7zip app.

Don't group. NEST. Then host Nested Family to a Ref. Line workplane and drive the angle of the RL with parameters in the host.

You know, if I might add: this is an extraordinary level of detail. I don't how you intend to you this small piece in your Project, but I think you are going to have other issues with it downstream.  Plus, what scale will it be shown AND PRINTED at?  I mean , you're going to lose all that detail as soon as you turn Thin Lines OFF.   FWIW.

I don't necessarily need it to be a detail line in the end product. I'm trying to make a line based 3D model family of a metal trim. The detail lines are from taking the outline of a 2D detail from another file and using it as a starting point for making the 3D family. The detail lines will be used as the outline for the extrusion. I could convert them to model lines. But some of the trims I need to be able to bend like this one.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I see what you are trying to achieve. This is the flashing profile for a sweep that will be extruded along the Ref. Line that is in Plan View.   It's a Line-Based Family.  

 

...this being the aim; right?

..personally, I'd just create different families with different profiles.  i.e. 30-degree, 45-degree, 60-degree, etc.

Yes that's what I'm trying to make, just with flexing end hook. 

Maybe not today but I'll try using nested families and report back here to say if it works out for me.

If I can't get that or anything else to work then I suppose I'll have to make separate families for different angles.

Nested family won't work here. Nor would the Group.  You are creating a Profile.  You are using the wrong template.

Use a profile at this level of detail to create 3D elements is not recommended.

So if I use a Profile template and get it flexing, how could I then apply that profile to a line based generic model?

Load the Profile Family into the Line-Based Family, start a sweep and select the Profile Family Type for the Profile to use.

 

….I'm not sure what you are thinking of, but you can most certainly schedule the length of a sweep geometry  created from a line-based family in the project. 

 

...a 2D Profile only dictates the shape of the geometry.  That's it.

To confirm then I would nest a profile family into a profile family? And just apply the angle paramter directly to the family instead of a refence line since profile templates don't have reference lines?  That's how I would get it to rotate the hook as a whole in a profile template?

I am modeling a variety of trim shapes for trims that will be used for window jambs, door headers, wall panel bases, roof ridge caps etc...

We are wanting to place accurate models around a model building and ensure that the trims will fit properly into corners and other areas they are placed.

I would create the shapes as profile families.  Load them in you project and create in-place sweeps using applicable profiles.  The reason I would use in-place sweeps instead of line based family is that you can create a monolithic sweep with multiple, including non-linear, segments.  

 

If you don't need multi-segment, non-linear sweeps, then for you can create different line-based families, load a profile to each one of them to create the sweep.  They will overlap when you have bent (L, Z) conditions unless you treat the family with voids to miter them.

 

I personally would simplify the profiles to their bounding box because 1) they are adequate for spatial coordination, construction drawings / rendering;  2) they still schedule correctly;  3) they can join cleanly at corner using join geometry.
