I didn't quite understand what you meant, the space bar or the rotate tool is not working?

If your intention is to rotate the furniture horizontally and you are not getting it, it may be a family floor based or face based. Please try to explain a little more and place the family.

Is just that when I push the space bar the unit just flips on the other side instead of looking towards me.

I have the same problem with the worktop.

I can't place it over the cabinets .

Note that in your family you have an orientation controller, which only allows you to rotate vertically, enter the family and  delete it.

If you want to insert these controllers again, click File >> Control.
These tools are for choosing and restricting the flip direction.

the issue may be how the family is hosted. can you upload the actual family for us to look at?

Eventually I managed to rotate them by editing the family and rotating in the front view.

The problem is now that I can't put them in their place as I can only move them up or down.

When moving the object:

  • select the object,
  • pick Move
    • uncheck Constrain
    • Check Disjoin.

that should allow you to move it it other directions.

Your family is face based with a height limitation, you have to apply it on the work plane or on the floor, or on any horizontal face, in your image it looks like you are applying it on the wall, so you will never be able to put it in position correct e flip.
