Roof window not being cut in plan view

I am using several Velux GDL Cabrio Balcony roof windows in a project, with the model downloaded from their website (https://www.velux.co.uk/professional/products/cad-bim/revit), which I have attached.

In plan the windows aren't cut, so they appear to extend beyond the roof. Roof Window Question.PNGRoof Window Question.PNG

From some light research I think the problem is a combination of nested window families and the cut plane. But when I tried to change the cut plane in the parent family, I realized the window is set up on a flat roof (instead of a vertical roof, more like a wall), and therefore the cut plane is parallel to the window itself. I can't seem to easily rotate the family or change the slope of the roof in the family.

Any ideas on how to adjust this, or is my problem something else entirely?

Hi @Toke_Valum_CEBRA

Can you make a separate post for your issue mentioning the version of Revit, screenshots and attach a file if possible?

This way you will get more feedback on your issue and ping me to the new post by adding @Viveka_CD

Regards,

I actually just noticed this issue as well. I would rather the roof window be cut and manually put it into the window schedule, but I really shouldn't have to choose.

Please post a link to the new thread if you decided to discuss the problem further.

Also, I came across this related idea that I think we would all like to see move forward, if anyone else cares to vote on it: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/roof-based-window-family/idi-p/7984448

Hello Barthbradley,

I'm having the same issue described here. Sorry for asking a very basic question but how do i convert the rooflight family to a generic model?

Many Thanks in advance for your help : ))

@john Edit the family and in the top left click Family Category and Parameters. Change category and save/load back into your project.

This is a roof based family changed from generic model to window category. Technically it is not a bug as view representation for windows is based on the cut plane defined in the family's plan view. For roofs in particular it is not pre-determined which angle the roof will be, when changing the family category to windows however the representation becomes based on the flat roof situation it is in within the family (which is uncut and shown completely with projection lines)... At least, that's what I think is happening...

Hello Martijn,

Thank you so much for your help : ))

The small screen clip image was very helpful to identify the command needed.

The rooflight issue has now been resolved.

Thanks again, John.

Nope. This belongs here as it shows changing the window to a generic model is not a real solution.

It is clear that OP was happy with @barthbradley answer so he or she marked the solution.  If you don't agree then create a new topic, state your additional requirements to get different answers.  And yes, you can show roof windows and schedule them.

"Not a real solution"?  Are you using the exact same Velux GDL Cabrio Balcony roof window that the OP posted here in 2018?

I am using the Velux GGL integra PK10 and its three years later so i think autodesk should have already fixed this in some way. And its a known problem because my colleagues are having the same issues.

What are we talking about?  What should Autodesk have fixed by now?

Window is not cutting properly in the floor plan like op's was. I dont have the patience nor the time to walk you through this. There might be some workarounds, but this problem is not solved in 2021 and 2022.

@thomasH93F9: we're organizing a sit-in at Velux Headquarters to protest their Revit Content.  You interested in joining us at 104 Ben Casey Drive in Fort Mill, SC, United States?   If so, bring some beer and chips.

I think the point was those roof window families would have to be generic families that are nested and shared in a roof-based family (window category) as to cut properly, see (quickly) edited version (rvt21)... fyi I didn't edit the void cut, you would have to create that in the main family or using a face-based void family... and also haven't associated the family parameters for scheduling here...

Has any one solved this issue? Once the skylights are changed to generic they will disappear from the window schedule.

Thanks

@martijn_pater Maybe not a bug in the sense that a roof hosted family is supposed to be displayed in this manner, but still a bug in the sense that it *should* be possible to create a roof based window family that is shown as cut in a plan view.
