Detail Lines, VG & Halftones..... Minutiae

Note: As was thinking this through realized that maybe there was a way to halftone/ edit linestyles etc for a  linked models. Turns out there is so, thinking this is probably the best approach.... then don't need to manipulate any of that in cad. But that still doesn't solve the delimma of needing more than one template.

But it does kind of seem like for me the approach needs to "always" be to any consultant type work I bring into my model have it be linked. Guess for starters would be good to know if that might be considered "best practice".

Below is for context.... and some related questions that still apply to whatever method I choose.

Started down this path of attempting to eliminate some view templates, but "quickly" realized I need to "design in" some flexibilty as to how detail lines in the architectural model/ various plans and imported 2d plans created by consultants (or edited consultant plans that I create) are handled.

Here's the long version. In an architectural set of drawings, I typically doctor up and create some preliminary kitchen equipment layout plans and electrical convenience receptacle plans.... etc.

These plans may or may not be edited versions of plans provided by consultants in 2d linework that I reconfigure to work with the current building configuration as they are developed over time..... in between when we bring back in the final consultant plans.

I'm running into issues getting my head wrapped around coming up with a method that makes sense to create a single template that can handle all these plan types (and potentially others), that are for all practical purposes simply halftones of ALL of the model elements. I want this template to be "Plan_Halftone"..... with minor exceptions.

So, I want to create a template that has EVERY line item in the template that has a halftone tick box to be selected..... so everything in the model is halftone. The only real glitches to pull this off seems to be for the "lines" category & the "detail items" categories.

As example, Let's say I get a kitchen equipment plan from a consultant and I need to manipulate that plan in cad. And I want to import that 2d plan into my model. That is linework and falls under the "lines" category. But, I also have detail items (as a part of the revit model that are not a part of the consultant plans) as well that I need to make sure (in most cases) don't get manipulated..... other than changing to halftone.

Meaning, the kitchen plan (as example) needs to be viewed in normal floor plan views , electrical plan view & kitchen equipment plan view. For the normal floor plan view (because it is not in our scope) & the Electrical plan view this imported partial plan wants to show up halftone. BUT, for the kitchen equipment plan view it wants to jump out and be standard non halftone lineweights.

I think I can approach these differences in a few different ways..... and right now, I'm all over the place with my method for handling this.... I'm just kind of manipulating each plan as I go along with no real rhyme or reason to how I'm approaching. Just feel like there is a better solution.

Here are what I see as some options:

1. Change everything in cad so all the linework is all the same linetype and lineweight except maybe a dashed line added. Then switch on the halftone category in revit for linestyle category AND the detail item category.... for any cad work brought in as a converted group.

2. Change all the linework in cad so that it is some sort of grey color and then don't do any halftone selecting in the view template..... because it's already grey. Problem here is that it wants to be black/ white for the kitchen equipment plan.... so don't see any way of not having a separate template.

3. See Beginning of this post. My thinking is probably how I should begin to approach after thinking it through. Thinking I could also approach through linking my revised consultant plans..... which is probably ideal I would think, but not sure how that factors into this and changing the the halftones from plan A type to Plan B type

Seems like the easy thing to do (whether its linked or imported 2D linework) woud be to just work with the same line types, line colors= lineweights that the 2d consultant uses..... and bring that into revit "as is" then change all the various linestyles globally..... but that ultimately also affects any 2d linework (detail lines) I've created in revit for groups, detail items etc..... so this throws a wrench into everything as well. Not sure how this translates for linked vs imported cad type plans.

Guess, in a nutshell, I'm curious how everyone handles "consultant" type drawings with the least amount of templates possible while working with turning on and off halftones.

Still thinking this through.... obviously, but could use some direction/ guidance as to possible approaches if anyone is willing to share.

Maybe this is the solution....

-All consultant plans are linked by default for all my projects.

-All consultant plans (whether manipulated by me or exactly as consultant has drawn) use the consultants lineweights/ linetypes, colors etc. No manipulation at the cad level.

-To have one "do all" halftone template, "simply" uncheck the "VG Imports Overides" category so that can manipulate any view to any line qualities needed. With the added benefit that if I need to update the template and reassign it I don't need to be concerned about over riding the newly assigned linework settings.

Does this make sense? Any other solutions someone might recommend?
