Is there a better way to show roof drains in plan than to just draw detail or model line circles?

Use a face based family. Revit most likely has some OOTB.

Not sure what problem prevents your roof drain family from showing up. Are you trying to show a roof drain on a lower floor plan or something where they aren't normally visible?

It is basically a flat roof with modified sub-elements (raised points/edges) to create the cricket slopes, and a roof or face based drain family.
