I have been recently testing a numerous brick texture materials in autodesk Revit environment and found two anomelies/display issues which I would like to claryfiy and understand:
1) textures seem to display horizontal / vertical lines when orbiting the model if the image is not of square dimensions
2) texture of larger size display not sharply in close up views
Example one
Below 3d view display same brick material with two different textures sizes (2025mm x 2100mm) and (2025mm x 1950mm).
The same textures start to display lines when the view is zoomed further away.
You can see vertical lines appear on the texture that has portrait ratio and horizontal lines appear on the texture of landscape proportions.
Conclusion: Is it best to make texture that is square! ??
See another example below. Two new sizes added of square ratio textures (2700mm x 2700mm) and (1350mm x 1350mm) and display much better.
A closer look at the two square textures .... What I have noticed that smaller textures display much sharper when zooming close.
I have tested this on few other brick textures with similar results. Also actuall size of a file or fomat (.bmp , .jpg, .png) does not seem to be a factor in the described behaviour. I would like to understand what is causing the display of vertical /horizontal lines effect and also why size of texture affects sharpness.
