Revit slow to respond when switching between programs

libengan

Running Windows 11, Revit 2024, fully updated on both fronts.

When I have Revit open, switch my focus to any other program, and then click back to Revit, I always get the busy blue spinning windows cursor for 5 to 6 seconds (never more, never less) before Revit becomes resposive and I can work in it.  Doesn't matter what project I have open.  This is becoming really annoying, especially when I am referencing other programs while trying to work in Revit at the same time.  This doesn't happen with any other programs for me.

Revit when open is taking up 2,700MB of RAM, and I don't see any CPU spikes when switching to it.

My System:

Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2255 CPU @ 3.70GHz

128 GB RAM

1TB SSD with 300+GB free

RTX 3080 GPU

Anyone else experiencing this?

Glad to see someone else has posted about this, I am also having this issue but it's intermittent. Sometimes it will switch between programs with no wait time, and other times it will sit and wait.

I'm on Windows 10 and Revit 2021.

Most instances it results back to an Addin and you have to move them individually from the specific folder into another to try and pinpoint the culprit.

I usually move them all out first to see if the problem still occurs before i go to far down the rabbit hole.

Any chance anyone has any concrete resolution to this?  One of our users has also noticed this.

I have this too in R25. Not always but most of the time. Can't figure out what triggers it. Reopening doesn't fix it.  Like others with same issue, the workaround is to click into ribbon space when reactivating the window and it doesn't do it.  Still annoying and mysterious.

Hi all, are you using a 3dconnexion device and have their driver installed?  https://3dconnexion.com/us/  - we have seen this problem when the driver is installed on the machine.  As a temporary fix, if you disable or uninstall the 3dconnexion software, it has shown to address this problem.

I am!  It also has a glitchy thing that happens.. it will work when first opening the program but soon stops working.  The behavior is so typical, i don't even try to use it in revit though i love using in Revizto and Navis so don't want to get rid of it. dangit.

Removing the 3dxWare software/drivers worked for us.  Temporarily fixing it by stopping the driver seemed to help too, but again.  Temporary solution.  We have old space navigators.

I am experiencing the same issue while installed driver for my 3D Connexion SpaceMouse Enterprise !

It is very frustrating i must have uninstalled driver and not to work with the 3d mouse in Revit ! it is ridiciulous !

Technical support from 3dconnexion wrote me that Autodes must do the fix .  Today i claimed  the case for support request (critical type) in autodesk support page.

Dear Autodesk Development team, what is going on?! please fix the issues for Revit 2022, 2023, 2024 and probably for 2025

Thanks all. I search and run Stop3Dxware then It works well. Then I removed 3DXService from Startup Menu. Seems fine.

I found work around. Click in properties or project browser or on menu. Do not click in drawing aera when switching program. When I return after checking  emails or using explorer, I usually click on empty area of the top ribbon.

I don't have this problem in R2025.4. I can't recall if I had it in R2024. Maybe they resolved it?

I have spinning wheels in all other kind of scenarios (inside and outside Revit)

FWIW, this is an old CPU (I have the W-2245, equally as ancient on an old DDR 4 platform).

Obviously size of the project and complexity matters. It is VERY HARD to compare from one user to another.

Revit Version: R2026.2
Hardware: i9 14900K, 64GB, Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada 16GB
Add-ins: ElumTools; Ripple-HVAC; ElectroBIM; Qbitec

I too have been dealing with issue for months, loosing valuable time every day. Today I uninstalled the 3D Connection driver from my machine. I installed the previous version of the space mouse driver and just like that, I have no lag when switching back into the Revit window. You can find old drivers on the 3D connection website. There is also a workaround for this issue. When you come back into a Revit window, if you click the top of the window, the lag will not happen. Simple workaround, but I would forget 60% of the time. So far, installing the previous driver seems to work for me.

I too have been having this issue, I found, for me, simply unplugging the device works. Seems easier than removing drivers

i have had the exact same problem for ages (on three different computers) and it was always a revit problem - it never occurred with any other software. I'm very grateful for having found this thread - i never would have guessed the 3DX drivers were in conflict with revit !

I've had the same issue for months now as well since buying the 3D Connexion SpaceMouse. Simply unplugging the device helped for a time, however, I had to uninstall the software to make Revit work correctly again. This is working within Revit 2023.

I have been resolving the issue with the new 3D connexion mouse SpaceMouse Enerprise  technical support as well as Autodesk support.

it is silly but they (around 12/2024 - 01-2025 ) did not offer any solution better than

"turn off the 3dconnexion driver and turn it back on again"   ...which seems really professionally
