REVIT Phases

We work for our local Education Authorities in the UK on a large volume of Schools

We have previously undertaken these in AutoCAD and usually start with an Existing GA plan either from the school or Authority.

From the Existing drawing we create a Development plan indicating several years worth of refurbishment works broken down into phases.

If we were to undertake these designs in REVIT & use the phasing options I think we'll come a little unstuck. The reason for this is that after the works have been completed at Phase 1, this then naturally becomes our existing plan again. As does the design at the end of Phase 2 as this then too will become the Existing layout again....... and so on through the lifetime of our relationship with the school.

Are my fears correct & if so is there an easier option to progress these designs along the road of using REVIT?

Hi Gary,

It sounds like Revit Phasing would work for you. Phasing is time based and is user configurable so typically 'Existing' comes first followed by future pahases. Revit's Demo tool works within phases as well.

I suggest that you join our Beta group or download a trial version of Revit to experience the workflow.

Thanks,

Dennis

The key is to do the demolition in the relevant construction phase. Initially a lot of designers try to put demolition in the 'existing' phase which makes display of demoilition and new, e.g. for an element to be moved, difficult.

So for a school which will have several works projects over time you would have an existing phase that would have the current plan of the school, then each works package would have a Revit phase in the project and all the work related to that works package, including demolition, would be in that phase. Now in Revit in views you select the phase you would like to see (e.g Hall Refurbishment) and use phase filters to create your demolition and new work plans. All work completed in prior phases will show as 'existing', all work in future phases, including items yet to be demolished, will be ignored thus giving a point in time snapshot.
