Revit occasionally stops accepting mouse button input

Revit 2018, Windows 10, both up-to-date.

Occasionally, usually after I've left my desk for 20 minutes or more, Revit will stop accepting mouse input. I can still use the ALT key with keyboard shortcuts to get into all of the menus but nothing I do with the mouse will register any input whatsoever. The pointer moves but there are no mouseover highlights, nothing on left click, middle click/drag, or right click. I can switch to other apps and use the mouse normally but when I switch back to Revit the mouse buttons go dead again. Revit is the only app that exhibits this behavior; Everything else works fine.

I'm not running any kind of mouse "software".

I usually have to use the ALT key shortcuts to sync and exit Revit, restart, then everything works again.

Any thoughts about how I can fix / avoid this?

I've been seeing similar behavior in 2017 and 2018 occasionally. I was thinking it was the inadequate machine that I'm working on.

Hmmm... it sounds like something might be amiss.

Recently Revit 2019 & 2020 will ignor cursor input after I do a sync with central.  I can use keyboard input with the Alt key to get access to the menu.  I can close the model this way, but even with no models open, the cursor has no access.  It works again after I close and reopen Revit.

Per other posts, I have uninstalled Enscape, but that did not resolve the problem.

Did you ever figure this out?  I have a machine that is doing this in 2021.

No, unfortunately. Sometimes switching to the “Revit Home” screen and back fixes some UI hangs but I can’t remember if it fixed this one.

I find that about every 12 months my Revit machine accumulates enough “quirks” that I have to wipe it and reinstall everything from Windows on up. It takes the better part of a day but in the end it’s less effort that trying to chase down and solve each little bug.

Do you have dual monitor by any chance? One of my colleague keep having the same issue with Revit not accepting mouse input. We tried updating the graphics card and windows and the issue still persist. I  ask them to disable one monitor and that seems to alleviate the issue.

I only have one monitor, but thank you for that information. Well, I’ve got a laptop running lid-closed with an external monitor. I’m running an RTX GPU. Perhaps if I ponied up the money for a Quadro this kind of thing would be less common?

I don't think video card has anything to do with it. Also do you run remote desktop? My colleague run team viewer and do run into this problem from time to time. Perhaps it may relate to Microsoft

I swapped my wireless mouse from my preferred mouse (Jelly Comb) to a Logitech M510.  This worked, there was no loss of mouse input functionality.  The Jelly Comb uses a standard MS driver that is pretty old, and the Logitech uses something newer.  At least that is what I surmised.

However I recently did a Dell Command Update, that updated several drivers and now I can use my Jelly Comb left-handed vertical mouse again without any problems!

Was it just Revit that was having issues?  In my case, it is only Revit.  No other apps.

Yes, just Revit.

It started happening again in Revit 2019.  However, I have come up with a workaround:

  1. Press Alt+V to activate the View ribbon.
  2. Type PV, to create a plan view.
  3. Use your down arrow key to select Floor Plan.
  4. Select any level in the list.  If no list entries, change Type, or press Alt-D to show all levels.
  5. Press Enter

This should re-engage your mouse for normal usage.

Actually... you don't need to create a new view for this to work.  When you get to the levels list, click Cancel

Another workaround:  Pull a view off and away from the program, before you sync.
